The GM Authority Take

Though the slight increase in GM Mexico sales during September continues the automaker’s growth trajectory in the Latin American country, the results represent a significant slowdown in the growth rate along with a significant drop in volume compared to prior months. Even so, last month’s performance represents GM’s 12th consecutive monthly increase in the Mexican market, enabling The General to remain competitive against Nissan as the market’s traditional leader.

The healthy performance in GM Mexico sales during September took place despite most of the automaker’s models in the red, and despite yet another drastic drop in sales of the best-selling Chevy Aveo, which lost more than 1,200 units on a year-over-year basis. That means that the solid performance of a few models was enough to move the bottom line into the green. One of these models is the Chevy Onix, which continues to improve its performance by consolidating itself as GM Mexico’s second best-selling model both for the month of September and for the first nine months of the 2024 calendar year.

Other models that contributed to the positive result include the Chevy Silverado, Chevy Captiva and Chevy Tornado Van. Several newer crossovers and the all-new GMC Canyon also saw dramatic triple-digit increases. GMC’s midsize pickup was the brand’s fastest-growing model year-over-year in Mexico, continuing to increase in popularity, enabling it to approach the volume of the locally-built GMC Terrain for the first time ever.
