GM Files Patent For Pickup Bed Two-Tier Loading System

GM has filed a patent for a two-tier loading system intended to enhance the usability of a pickup truck bed. The application was assigned patent number US 12,110,064 B2 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and was published on October 8th, 2024. The GM patent was originally filed on November 18th, 2021, and lists two U.S.-based engineers as the inventors, including Blaine D. Christensen and William A. McDonald.

The GM patent outlines a two-tier loading system for pickup truck beds that is designed to provide more flexible storage options. The system consists of two primary panel sections that can be mounted to the interior side walls of the truck bed. The first panel is fixed to the truck bed, while the second panel is pivotable, allowing for different configurations depending on the needs of the user.

The idea behind this system is to maximize the storage space in a pickup truck bed, especially when transporting items of different sizes. For example, the pivoting panel can be raised or lowered to create two distinct storage zones, allowing the user to carry items like plywood or construction materials on one level, while still having space for smaller items on another level.

Unlike traditional storage systems that might rely on aftermarket solutions like bed sliders or compartments under the seats, this GM design integrates directly into the truck bed’s structure. It also aims to provide better organization and prevent damage to fragile items by allowing them to be securely stored in separate compartments. The panels include multiple mounting elements and are designed to support heavy loads, ensuring durability and practicality.

While there is a plethora of storage solutions available in the aftermarket, this system seeks to provide options without sacrificing any of the usability. The ability to pivot the second panel also means that users can adjust the system based on the specific size and type of cargo they are hauling, making it more versatile for a wide range of uses.
