GM Energy PowerBank Home Installation Now Available Nationwide

Customers across the United States can now get home installation of the GM Energy PowerBank energy storage unit, with availability starting on October 10th, 2024, according to General Motors.

The PowerBank is not a standalone product, but is sold as part of the GM Energy Home System priced at $12,700, though it can also be purchased separately as an add-on by customers who already bought the GM Energy V2H Bundle, starting at $7,299.

The General notes that the GM Energy PowerBank is available with capacities of both 10.6 kWh and 17.7 kWh. The modularity of the system enables linking several PowerBank units together to create a larger total storage capacity. The storage unit can draw energy from the electric grid or be charged using solar panels directly if available.

Among the uses of the PowerBank are storing energy at low-cost periods and then using it at peak demand hours when electricity is normally more expensive, or utilized to power the home during a blackout. The power can also be directed to charging EVs or feeding current to the home. At typical U.S. rates of household energy usage, tandem 17.7 kWh PowerBank units can keep an average dwelling running as normal for up to 20 hours during an outage.

Owners of the system can use GM Energy apps to manage energy storage and use. For those who need integration with a solar energy system, General Motors installation partner Qmerit is recommended for the process, from planning to the actual install. These energy management products are now offered in all fifty U.S. states.

The PowerBank system is also significantly integrated with The General’s vehicle-to-house (V2H) technology. Some of the models which are currently V2H equipped include the following:

GM Energy vice president Wade Sheffer remarks that “the flexibility of our energy management tools, combined with one of the market’s largest lineups of vehicle-to-home-capable EVs, gives our customers more control over their energy use” using the PowerBank system.

  1. There is no way most people are going to pay 12,700 dollars for this system. Gm should have invested in hybrid systems, they would of sold more units.
