Federal zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) rebate claims reached a new high in Canada during the month of August, driven largely by high EV demand and a flood of rebate requests in the province of Quebec. The vehicle with the most incentive requests during that time period was the Chevy Equinox EV, beating the Tesla Model 3.
According to a report from Automotive News Canada, the Chevy Equinox EV accounted for 1,853 incentive requests in August, as compared to 1,833 incentive requests for the Tesla Model 3 during the same time period.
During the month of July, the Tesla Model 3 prompted 1,650 incentive requests, as compared to 1,500 incentive requests for the Chevy Equinox EV. Looking at totals for the 2024 calendar year, the Chevy Equinox EV shows just 3,815 requests, as compared to 9,490 requests for the Model 3. Year-to-date figures are topped by the Tesla Model Y, which has accumulated a whopping 19,188 requests so far in 2024.
The Canadian iZEV (Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles) program offers a CA$5,000 rebate for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) with an all-electric range greater than 49 km (30 miles). For eligibility, zero-emission passenger cars must have a base price under CA$55,000, while higher-cost variants are capped at CA$65,000. Larger vehicles (minivans, SUVs, and pickups) qualify if the base price is less than CA$60,000, with a maximum limit of CA$70,000 for higher-cost variants.
A total of 20,801 rebate claims were processed under the Ottawa incentive program during the month of August. Quebec accounted for 60 percent of the total claims, likely fueled by provincial policy changes encouraging buyers to act before a rebate reduction goes into effect next year.
The iZEV program has processed 131,426 claims year-to-date across the Canadian market.
Pricing for the Chevy Equinox EV starts at CA$50,699 (or US$37,340 at current exchange rates) for the 2LT FWD configuration, and CA$54,199 (US$39,920 at current exchange rates) for the 2LT AWD.

Wish GM would update the Charging speed of the Blazer, Nox, Lyriq, and Optiq.
Sorry but those charging speeds are so five years ago.
Those vehicles would be selling even quicker if they charge at 250kW
Price is king. Most modern EVs have plateaued in features and need to lower their prices to convince people. Otherwise we need new technology.
