Cadillac Design Studio ‘Very Busy,’ Sources Say

For those folks who haven’t been paying attention, GM has released multiple Cadillac concepts this year, with the drop-top, ultra-lux Cadillac Sollei unveiled in July, and high-performance, sci-fi-esque Cadillac Opulent Velocity unveiled less than a month later. As such, it should come as no surprise that GM Authority has learned that the Cadillac design studio is “very busy.” In fact, according to GM Authority sources, Cadillac is the busiest design studio at GM currently.

While it may be no surprise that the Cadillac design studio is busy, learning that it’s currently the busiest design studio at GM may be something of a shock. After all, Cadillac has a relatively tiny product portfolio compared to other GM brands, such as Chevrolet.

Nevertheless, it starts to make sense given all the activity around Caddy this year, especially with the recent expansions of the IQ portfolio of utility vehicles, including with the Cadillac Escalade IQ, Cadillac Vistiq and Cadillac Optiq. Then there’s the refreshed, ICE-powered Cadillac XT4, plus the overhauled Cadillac CT6 and XT5, the latter two of which are exclusive to the Chinese market. There’s also the refreshed Cadillac XT6, another Chinese exclusive, while the refreshed 2025 Cadillac CT5 sedan and ICE-powered, refreshed 2025 Cadillac Escalade are also arriving on the market.

Add all this to the two jaw-dropping concepts that were released over the summer, the Sollei and Opulent Velocity, and it all certainly starts to add up.

Even so, GM Authority sources indicate that the Cadillac design studio is far from done, with more design work on the way, in particular as it relates to production vehicles. Naturally, GM Authority will be there to cover all the latest, so make sure to stay tuned.

In related news, GM Authority recently hosted a poll asking readers which of the two recent Cadillac concepts (Sollei or Opulent Velocity) they preferred. Initial results point to the Sollei as the more popular concept, with 65 percent of poll respondents voting in favor of the drop-top two-door, as compared to 35 percent in favor of the Opulent Velocity.

  1. “There’s also the refreshed Cadillac XT6, another Chinese exclusive…”

America needs it too. I don’t know why GM is only bringing all the new ICE Cadillacs to China.

    1. Blame market trends. Cadillac is prioritizing EVs in North America because, even in spite of the dip in overall sales, luxury EVs are still more popular and profitable than entry-level EVs at the moment.
Also, staying the course on EVs could help shed any lingering belief that the brand is for old people.

Conversely, GM is throwing everything it can at China to stay relevant and that includes ICE models. It’s less concerned with a consistent brand image there as Cadillac has none of the baggage there as it does in North America.

  6. I think it’s a beautiful car, but it wouldn’t sell. It would be another Cadillac in the US that doesn’t sell.

  7. I’m not a big fan of EVs but I like this and the Celestiq. Half a dozen of my clients are asking about this one and what we can do to make it extra unique. Like Rolls Royce customers, we have people who love the high-end domestics and want to make it their own. All this is possible thanks to the automotive artisans who keep this industry busy.

  8. Does this mean that sedans will be making a comeback?? There are people who are tired and aren’t interested in crossovers and SUVs. I read an article recently that says that Gen Z prefers sedans over crossovers/ SUVs. Cadillac needs to offer exciting coupes and sedans to bring in the younger generation because they prefer cars from Japanese auto manufactures. I just want Cadillac to be able to seriously compete against the European and Japanese brands. This is America!!

  10. Cadillacs MUST be the style leader at GM. Cadillac is GM’s aspiration brand. Cars with the Cadillac crest should be known as expensive but attainable at the base, while being super expensive with its elite models as is the Celestiq which is absolutely stunning when seen in person.

  11. If the results of the last poll about the style of the Celestiq vs. the Escala indicate anything they SHOULD be busy. Busy fixing their mistakes!

  12. I think the new Cadillac Sollei is Beautiful car, but I think it should be a limited design exclusively for those that can afford it, so the model continues on should it sell better than expected! It is a Beautiful car, but will probably be limited because of price, hence the Exclusivity, or at least, built on demand. That said, I would definitely buy one if I had the money, even though I’m not a Cadillac person, i.e., the Cadillac’s from the 60’s and 70’s.
