2025 Ford Expedition Debuts As Chevy Tahoe, Suburban Rival

The 2025 Ford Expedition, the chief rival of the Chevy Tahoe and Chevy Suburban, is entering an all-new generation. Ford has pulled the wraps off the new Expedition shortly after its luxury counterpart, the Lincoln Navigator, was unveiled in August. A few of the top highlights of the all-new Ford Expedition and long-wheelbase Expedition Max include a new infotainment system, a Tremor model, a split liftgate, and wider availability of the BlueCruise hands-free driving system.

Ford has redesigned the Expedition with families in mind since this full-size SUV is primarily used as a family hauler. “For Expedition customers, family is at the center of everything they do,” Ford Utilities general manager Trevor Scott said. “We spent more than 1,100 hours talking with customers about their everyday lives. And with those insights, we’ve rethought and redesigned Expedition to help customers make the most of their precious time with family and to make life easier – before, during, and after every trip they make.”

The EcoBoost turbocharged 3.5L V6 remains standard under the hood of the new Expedition, but the old standard tuning is gone. The new standard output is 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. The specs for the High Output variant remain 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. This tuning is standard in the Tremor model and optional in the Platinum trim.

The 2025 Ford Expedition model range is simplified compared to the outgoing model. It now has only four trims: Active, Tremor, King Ranch, and Platinum. Active is the new base trim, Tremor replaces the old Timberline model as the off-roader, King Ranch is a premium trim with some Western flair, and Platinum is the top luxury trim. In addition to the Expedition Timberline being discontinued, the old XL, XLT, and Limited trims are gone.

The exterior design of the new 2025 Ford Expedition isn’t radically different from the outgoing generation. It retains a boxy shape with straight lines throughout the body. However, the new model has a little more visual variety in its model range, with the Stealth appearance package adding dark accents, the Premium Ultimate model adding tasteful chrome and big wheels, and the Tremor model employing orange accents, a unique grille, and 33-inch all-terrain tires. Speaking of the Expedition Tremor, a few of its off-road perks include standard 4WD, skid plates, extra ground clearance, and an electronic locking rear differential.

The big story of the new Expedition’s exterior is the Ford Split Gate. It’s a split liftgate on which only the top three quarters can open to prevent items from falling out of the cargo area. The bottom quarter folds down like a pickup truck’s tailgate. This has a weight rating to support up to 500 pounds and includes an available seatback from the Cargo Tailgate Manager option. It can also turn into a serving table for tailgating.

The new Ford Digital Experience comprises a 24-inch panoramic display serving as an extended digital gauge cluster, Google Assistant, Alexa Built-in, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An optional Ford Connectivity package further adds Wi-Fi hotspot capability, Google Play apps, and Google Maps as the default navigation system.

Previously, BlueCruise – Ford’s rival to Super Cruise – was only an option on the top Platinum trim. For the 2025 Ford Expedition, BlueCruise is now optional on every trim. This greatly expands the availability of Ford’s hands-free highway driving system.

Pricing for the 2025 Ford Expedition is forthcoming, but we expect its pricing to be similar to their closest analogs in the Chevy Tahoe and Chevy Suburban lineups. It will be available to order starting October 24th, and they’ll start arriving in showrooms in Spring 2025.

  2. I think the rear end treatment is light years better that the outgoing model. The interior is pretty sweet too on the upper end models. The big advantage for the GM rivals remains the multiple powertrain choices, where with the Ford, it’s basically one motor.

  6. This is a MUCH better competitor now. I’d still buy a Suburban but thumbs up to Ford for trying.

  7. Split gate is a very useful addition, although it is not a new idea. The interior is very nice without going “full screen suicide”. The late-50’s early-60’s Mopar-style oval steering wheel is wacky-cool. The two engine tunes effectively cover the 5.3 and 6.2 smallblocks, power-wise. The Tremor trim shakes me to the core, that’s my favorite.

Like others have said though, is it all enough to dethrone gm in this class of vehicle?

  8. That dash and steering wheel…. Not bad overall but that dash and steering wheel is an immediate no for me!

Hopefully a few hours were spent asking customers how big their garages are, so you don’t repeat the Excursion.

    1. I’d buy an Excursion if they built one today. Same with a 3/4 Suburban. Half tons don’t really interest me.

      1. A lot of us would.

But remember how Ford went all-out to build the ultimate SUV, but forgot to consider where folks parked. Worked if you had a pole shed on a ranch, but IIRC the Excursion didn’t fit into a lot of regular garages or parking spaces. GM has that “just right” formula for the Suburban and Tahoe that Ford still hasn’t figured out.

        1. Looking at the specs the Excursion was 7 inches longer than my Suburban 2500 and 1in wider. I’m not sure how much of an issue those extra 7 inches were. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen anyone try to park a Suburban/Yukon XL/Escalade ESV in a little one car garage so I wouldn’t imagine an Excursion being parked inside either.

  10. Dang, if you thought GM was bad with their trim changes, Ford just went an axed their bottom two on this thing.

    1. The Active trim is the base model, taking over from XL and XLT. Similar to GM’s new hierarchy.

  11. No comparison, the Expedition isnt close in any metric especially curb appeal. Ford continues to drop in popularity. Anyone care to guess how many recalls on the 25 Expedition before customer deliveries even start?
