2024 Chevy Silverado MD Recalled Over Inactive Airbag Issue

Failure of inactive airbags to deploy during a crash has led GM to issue a Safety Recall for a small number of 2024 Chevy Silverado MD affected by this issue, with a remedy currently available free of charge.

Notably, the 2024 Chevy Silverado MD trucks include Silverado 4500 HD, 5500 HD and 6500 HD variants of the Bow Tie’s medium-duty chassis cab trucks. The vehicles are built by Navistar.

The problem: during installation of the airbags in the affected Chevy Silverado MD trucks, installers may have failed to activate the airbag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). Instead, the module was left in manufacturing mode because of errors in the module programming tools’ software that were not detected at the time.

The hazards: the airbags subject to this safety recall may fail to deploy if a crash or other collision occurs. The lack of airbag deployment could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants during an accident.

The fix: General Motors has instructed dealerships to offer a fix for the affected Chevy Silverado MD trucks free of charge to the customer. This fix involves activating the airbag Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) that was left in “manufacturing mode” during production. No components are needed to apply this remedy. The end date of availability for this fix is unclear at this time.

Affected components: airbag sensing and diagnostic module.

  • 2024 Chevy Silverado 6500 HD
