Supercars Chevy driver Will Brown wielded his No. 87 Chevy Camaro like a weapon as he held off his teammate, Broc Feeney in the No. 88 Camaro, during the closing laps of the Sandown 500 on September 15th, 2024. Brown clung to the lead in an incredible fight to the finish, crossing the line less than half a second ahead of Feeney when the checkers finally dropped.
Brown shared the wheel of the No. 87 Camaro with Scott Pye for the enduro race, while Feeney’s efforts in the No. 87 Camaro were supported by veteran Jamie Whincup. It wasn’t an easy victory for the Brown/Pye pairing, as they had to defend their lead throughout five safety car periods while fending off a charge from the No. 88 Camaro of Feeney and Whincup, who won the 2023 Sandown 500.
“God, what a race,” Brown said in a postrace interview. “Scott [Pye] did a mega job. I was a bit nervous at the start when they got underneath us and the 88 was leading.”
He added, “Those last laps were nerve wracking, I thought don’t put a foot wrong, because Broc’s going to be there and I know he’ll pounce, but it was awesome… I’m just so stoked to get this, a win here at Sandown, the first round of the enduros, it’s a bloody good way to start it, so thanks to all the guys and girls at Red Bull Ampol Racing.”
The victory marked Will Brown’s first win since New Zealand in April. He maintains the points lead, stretching to a 189-point buffer over Chaz Mostert, driver of the No. 25 Ford Mustang GT, who finished a distant seventh at Sandown with Lee Holdsworth.
James Golding and David Russel rallied the No. 31 Camaro to a third-place finish, followed by Matt Payne and Garth Tander in the No. 19 Mustang. The No. 888 Camaro of Craig Lowndes and Cooper Murray rounded out the top five.
Looking ahead, the next time the Supercars Chevy and Ford teams will be on track will be on October 10th through 13th for the crown jewel of the Supercars Championship, the Bathurst 1000.
