Some GMC Sierra Trucks With Turbo 2.7L Engine Require A Fuel Injector Fix

General Motors has published a new service update to remedy a fuel injector flow rate problem that impacts several models from various GM brands, including the 2019 through 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine under the hood.

In Service Update N242450631, GM describes the problem as an ECM that fails to “sufficiently control fuel injector flow rate under certain driving conditions” in affected GMC Sierra trucks.

As a reminder, the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B engine involved in the service update develops 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 as well as the pre-refreshed 2022 Sierra 1500 Limited. Torque is boosted to 430 pound-feet in the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, while horsepower output continues at 310 horses.

The exact number of GMC Sierra trucks involved in the update is unclear at this point. However, dealer service personnel are instructed to promptly apply the fix both to any remaining affected Sierra units in inventory as well as any trucks brought to the dealership by their owners for other service. The remedy is offered through September 30th, 2039 and is carried out at zero cost to the customer.

Reprogramming the Engine Control Module (ECM) is the only step needed to correct the fuel injector flow rate issue and return it normal operation. No parts are required for the process. Diagnosis and reprogramming will take approximately 30 minutes to complete in total. If the repair cannot be completed immediately, a courtesy vehicle may be supplied to the Sierra owner if necessary.

Not included in the update or subject to the issue are the other three GMC Sierra engine options, including the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine cranking out 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, and the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax engine.

Beneath the body panels, the 2019 and newer GMC Sierra 1500 is underpinned by the GM T1 platform. Production takes place at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana and GM Silao plant in Mexico.
