SAIC-GM Celebrates Two Millionth Buick GL8 Built In China

As the company itself had anticipated earlier this month, SAIC-GM has just celebrated the production of the two-millionth Buick GL8 in China.

General Motors’ main joint venture in China produced its two-millionth Buick GL8 on September 23rd in Shanghai, specifically at the SAIC-GM Cadillac Jinqiao plant facility where the current generation of Buick’s successful full-size MPV is built. The automaker held an official ceremony at the factory to celebrate the significant production milestone with employees and the local press.

Remarkably, the 2,000,000th Buick GL8 built makes it the first premium MPV to reach this milestone and cements its leading position as the most successful model in its class in China – the only country in the world where it is officially manufactured and sold. In fact, the GL8 reclaimed the top spot in MPV sales in the Chinese market in August by delivering 9,974 units – its best monthly figure so far in 2024.

The two-millionth Buick GL8 produced in China is an all-new fourth-generation GL8 PHEV in the range-topping Avenir trim, painted in the metallic blue color that has characterized it since the official launch of the electrified version in late April. During the celebration ceremony, SAIC-GM awarded the historic GL8 plug-in hybrid unit to Chinese swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Sun Yang.

With the arrival of the all-new Buick GL8 PHEV, Buick’s longest-running model in China has managed to catch up with consumer demand and increase its competitiveness level against aggressive electrified MPV rivals from Chinese brands. Since its introduction in mid-year, the GL8 PHEV has received more than 30,000 concrete orders and continues to increase its popularity among local customers month after month.

Continuously manufactured since 1999, the Buick GL8 has been an innovative vehicle that has evolved over a quarter-century by adding ever-increasing refinement, comfort, advanced safety features, the latest infotainment systems and cutting-edge driver-assistance technologies. Each variant of the GL8 model family meets the changing needs of its diverse customer base and the entire MPV segment in China.

  1. Bring the GL8 Century to the US, dammit.

  2. With all the Ubers out there, this would sell like hotcakes here in the US. Putting politics aside (admittedly not easy), the Chinese sell amazingly well built Buicks! Isn’t there a way to be assured of security issues with the technology?

    1. Yes. The US cars can just use the infotainment system used in the other US models. Although I think its the same software in all the cars. The Envision uses the same Intellilink system in the Enclave.

  3. Has GM Authority reported about the new Buick concept, the OMPV luxury minivan?

  4. I do miss premium minivans like the Chrysler Town & Country, Buick Terazza and Oldsmobile Silhouette. Probably one of the reasons I like the Enclave so much. It’s the closest thing you can get to a premium American style minivan unless you go for a top trim Kia Carnival or Honda Odyssey. There’s the Pacifica also but the transmission sucks in those. That said, the GL8 would have been one model from the SAIC-GM partnership I would have loved to see in the US.

  5. I have a 2007 Terraza CXL and a 2024 Enclave ST, which replaced the 2023 Pacifica “S” we had for one year. I have watched the Enclave since it was introduced in 2008 and finally got one with the last V6. I have owned two Silhouettes and indeed sold them from 1990 to 2004.

  6. Was hoping to make an Electra LT my next Buick but doesn’t look like that will ever happen 🙁
