Poll: Should GMC Sierra Adopt Brand’s New Vertically-Oriented Display?

GM’s technology offerings are changing at a very rapid pace, and alongside the tech updates, The General is evolving its design work as well. That includes the design inside the cabin, where many modern GM models present an overhauled infotainment layout with new central touchscreens. GMC is no different, with the latest infotainment design update incorporating a vertically oriented central display. Even so, the GMC Sierra continues to equip a horizontal display. Which leads us to ask – should the Sierra adopt the brand’s new vertically oriented display?

GMC Yukon

For those readers who may be unaware, the fourth-generation light-duty GMC Sierra 1500 was refreshed for the 2022.5 model year, at which time the majority of model variants incorporated a larger infotainment screen. The new screen is horizontally oriented, and can be found on every GMC Sierra 1500 trim level, with the exception of the entry-level GMC Sierra Pro. Pro trims are equipped with the seven-inch GMC Infotainment System, while all other trims are equipped with the 13.4-inch GMC Premium display.

GMC Terrain

Pulling back, however, we find that the GMC brand as a whole seems to be moving towards a vertically oriented screen layout. For example, the 2024 GMC Acadia and 2025 GMC Terrain both incorporate a smaller vertical screen, while the 2024 GMC Sierra EV and 2025 GMC Yukon both incorporate a larger vertical screen.

GMC Canyon

Notably, the GMC Sierra 1500 isn’t the only model in Big Red’s stable to incorporate a horizontal screen. The GMC Canyon is also equipped with a horizontal screen, once again measuring in at 13.4 inches. Vote in our other poll if you think the Canyon should go vertical.

All things considered, it’s highly likely the next-generation GMC Sierra 1500 will incorporate to a larger screen with, you guessed it, vertical orientation, thus necessitating a rework for the center stack and migration of the HVAC controls.

That said, we still want to know – should the GMC Sierra adopt the brand’s new vertically oriented display? Tell us by voting in the poll below, and don’t forget to voice your opinion by posting it in the comments!

  1. Whatever direction they choose, the important thing is to integrate it into the dash well so that it doesn’t look like a glued on ipad.

    1. like Toyota trucks. Their screens look like a afterthought.

    2. Exactly! The current style across the industry is that the display looks like an afterthought.

  2. I also prefer a screen nicely integrated into the dash design. However, my main concern is when essential controls are embedded somewhere in the screen. This just makes for an unnecessary and dangerous distraction. Some physical buttons are important for safety!

  3. My preference is no screen. Buttons and switches are simpler and safer.

    1. I agree, but unfortunately, we have gone to a tech world, but we are also moving to fast on it and customers thoughts evidently don’t matter so much anymore in the industry. Today we have a president telling us what we are going to get, and an industry that is kissing his backside!

    2. how about BOTH like it used to be. screen to show the info, buttons to actually do the things

  8. The GMC Sierra dash is the best looking in the industry. It looks like a rugged ICE vehicle.

The vertical screen looks like a Tesla or other EV. I don’t like it. Leave the vertical screens to the EVs.

  9. Keep it horizontal. It looks better that way.

  11. I like the 23 Denali just as it is now.. I am older than dirt & know the dash. The only thing I don’t like is fuel gage line color gray. That red line for empty bugged me for a couple months until I got used to it. .

  12. Leave it as it is! I have a 2022 and the horizontal screen was one on the positive attributes that I like. Vertical looks like a Ram or Tesla. It takes too much effort to read it!

  15. Love the horizontal in my 23 Sierra. I can control my HVAC manually, but the big maps on my Android auto is amazing. I don’t like the vertical setup.

  16. Leave the display horizontal.

My ’23 Sierra display looks just fine with a quick glance to the right, no need to nod up and down on a huge iPad.
I recently picked up a ’24 Acadia for work and the display is huge, requiring a lot of vertical scanning to locate icons. Even turning that system on is a bit silly. There is a small switch at the top left corner of the display surround, that tends to blend in with the rest of the surround.

The pocket behind the display also serves as a handy spot for sunglasses.

With the horizontal display, dragging the desired icons across the screen puts them closer to hand.

The ’23 still has CarPlay and Android Auto, but my biggest beef with the system (and a couple of other owners I know) is that Google Assistant for voice commands in the vehicle requires a subscription. I understand subcription-based user fee services, but basic voice commands should be standard.

  17. There are more important issues with GM trucks to rectify first, like the poor engines that have been failing for years and now the baby 2.7 that is a broken down dog and does not give better economy. Stick to what’s important instead of adding lipstick

  21. The only thing I like that is horizontal & vertical is a” WOMAN ” No disrespect intended. GM dosen’t make women only crash dummies.

  22. Horizontal please.

  23. Since when does GM do anything with the customer in mind? That being said, I prefer the screen layout to be horizontal. In my ’23 Sierra, with the screen being horizontal, its easier to see all of the information without having to take your eyes completely off the road. I’ve seen the vertical screen in the Ram trucks and the information at the bottom is hard to read and still keep one eye on the road.

  26. After driviing vehicles with both orientations, I MUCH prefer the horizontal layout and would not likely buy one with a vertical display.

  27. No the vertical screen is horrible leave the new horizontal look it’s much nicer and blends in with the dash

  28. I have the wide screen in my 2024 AT4. The screen is fine but the proprietary google is a pain. Only google allows full use of all the screen space, If you use anything else Spotify, Waze, Apple CarPlay etc only about 1/2 or less of the screen is used, poor usage of screen real estate
