No. 8 NASCAR Chevy Narrowly Misses 2024 Playoffs: Video

Kyle Busch, driver of the No. 8 NASCAR Chevy Camaro ZL1, won’t get the opportunity to compete in the 2024 Playoffs for the Cup Series title. He gave it everything he had at Darlington on September 1st, 2024, but came up short at the line as a Ford clinched a Playoff berth in his stead.

Busch surged into second place after a late-race restart on Lap 351 at Darlington. He spent the rest of the race attempting to track down Chase Briscoe’s No. 14 Ford Mustang Dark Horse, who took off with the race lead. Both Busch and Briscoe were in a must-win situation to make the Playoffs, as neither racer had enough to make it on points alone. Even when Briscoe washed up the track and got into the wall, Busch didn’t have enough momentum to overtake him, and finished second, 0.361 seconds back.

“When I made it through a few of those guys right there on the start, I thought we had a shot to get there,” Busch said. “I think I just needed him to have maybe three or four more lap older tires for me to be able to break through the wake… Once I got within his air, I really didn’t have enough to power through that, to get closer. I was kind of sliding already.”

Ross Chastain, driver of the No. 1 NASCAR Chevy, also finds himself shut out of the Playoffs. Chastain stayed out during a late race pit stop cycle, hoping to gain valuable points, but his older tires proved to be his undoing as he couldn’t hold off Briscoe. He finished fifth. Kyle Larson, who led the most laps at Darlington in the No. 5 Camaro, finished fourth.

The following drivers will compete in the Round of 16 in the 2024 Playoffs:

  • Kyle Larson, No. 5 Chevy Camaro ZL1
  • Christopher Bell, No. 20 Toyota TRD Camry
  • Tyler Reddick, No. 45 Toyota TRD Camry
