Here May Be Why Your GM Vehicle’s Google Maps App Has Connectivity Issues

Some GM customers may find that their infotainment system displays a persistent Offline icon when attempting to use the Google Maps app, or that the app displays a persistent “Can’t connect to Google” message while in use. Critically, this issue could affect a huge number of General Motors models from across The General’s various brands, including vehicles located in the U.S., Canada, Mexico South America, the Middle East, and Europe. Now, General Motors has released a new Preliminary Information bulletin to address the issue and what can be done to solve it.

The new Preliminary Information bulletin is tagged as PIT6151A. In the bulletin, General Motors lists the following vehicles as potentially affected by the “can’t connect” issue for the Google Maps app:

To fix the connectivity issue, GM recommends that owners first manually update the app. In order to update the Google Maps app, users can take the following actions – first, open up the Maps app from the home screen on the primary infotainment screen. Next, open up the Settings menu by tapping the small gear-shaped icon located in the top left of the screen.

The Google Maps Settings menu in a GM vehicle.

Settings menu open after tapping the gear icon on the left

With the Settings menu open, tap the About & Help option, located at the bottom of the list. Then, tap on the version number to access the Maps app updated screen. The version number should coincide with the following naming convention: YY.MM.DDHHMM.

From there, simply select the Update button. This should update the Maps application, and thus solve the “Can’t connect to Google” issue.

  1. I have a new 2024 Acadia that I bought in August. I have not had any Google Maps connectivity issues but I noticed on your screen shot that the newest update was dated 9/5 so I updated as a preventative measure. The update went fine and just as described. Thanks for the heads-up!

  4. Now that the OTA update system is back functioning, shouldn’t this update happen automatically?

    1. this is from the play store. The paused OTA updates from from GM not Google.

      1. Sorry, but I thought he was talking about the Google Maps that is embedded in the Lyriq’s infotainment system, not one in your iPhone via ApplePlay.

  5. I had this issue but with Android Auto in general. But one update on the phone side landed up fixing it.

  6. When you prevent drivers from using Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto in your EVs, the system you’re forcing them to use better be flawless.

This is really not a good look and at some point, I really think GM is going to be forced to make a deal with Apple and Google’s Android division to allow their in-car projections.

    1. LMAO, you know this issue was caused by Google right not GM? This was an android issue and I bet a form of this issue also exited in Android Auto.

    2. The benefits of Google Built In far outweigh any perceived issues.

Funny how no one was raving about Carplay and Android Auto in 2014 when GM launched it ahead of everyone else.

The challenge with anyone doing OTA Updates is they have to complete and not leave critical systems not working or you brick your vehicle! (see recent Rivian and Tesla examples)

  7. Does anybody know how this would effect Super Cruise?

    1. It doesn’t. Super Cruise uses a different map.

  9. I have a 2023 Cadillac XT5 Sport Platinum. Apple CarPlay and Apple Maps work superbly! We have all Apple products and use DuckDuckGo as our browser on all of our devices. I will never ever use that horrible Google or any of their products or services…!!!

  10. @meh: It’s custom Google in-car software co-developed with GM. Android auto is your phone being projected on your car’s screen. They are different.

  12. If your Google Maps is already up-to-date and it is still offline (no maps, etc.) after following the instructions, go to your Infotainment center Home, Settings, Apps, All apps, Maps, and touch Force Stop. It will warn you that a forced stop might cause the app to misbehave (isn’t it already ;-)) but tell it to stop the app anyway. Then go to the Maps app and it should start right up and put you online. At least this worked for me.
