The inventory of new GMC vehicles at dealerships is significantly higher than average for August 2024, with a 90 days supply of in-stock or in-transit units compared to a 77 days supply for the U.S. auto market collectively.
Per research by Cox Automotive, GMC has the second highest days supply out of GM’s quartet of core brands, with only Cadillac higher at a 113 days supply, while Chevrolet has the lowest figure at 80 days.
The American automotive industry considers a 60 days supply for a vehicle brand to be optimal, striking a balance between having enough stock on hand to meet customer demand and having a backlog of unsold vehicles pile up. Unsold GMC inventory is clearly increasing, with dealerships having 69 days supply a month earlier in July and a near-ideal 63 days supply in September 2023.
Turning to data and estimates on individual Big Red vehicle models, the high days supply is due almost entirely to GMC Hummer EV Pickup and GMC Hummer EV SUV models failing to move off dealership lots. Huge numbers of both variants of the GMC Hummer EV are currently available, with the arrival of new units outpacing sales, and it is these two models that have driven the brand’s inventory up to a 90 days supply.
Leaving the Hummer EV out of the equation, days supply estimates show most other GMC models at or below the optimal 60 days supply. Only the GMC Yukon, with slightly more than 20,000 units at dealerships across the U.S., is significantly above this average. However, even the Yukon is selling roughly three times faster than the Hummer EV Pickup and SUV, based on estimates from inventory and sales reports.
Big Red has near-optimal inventory levels for the Acadia, Canyon, Sierra and Terrain. Meanwhile, the three-decade-old GMC Savana van is selling so quickly that General Motors can’t keep up with demand, and the number of these highly popular vans on dealership lots is currently extremely low.
Meanwhile, for the U.S. market in general, the arrival of 2025 model-year vehicles has caused an end-of-summer rise in inventory. Approximately 25 percent of the 2.8 million vehicles at dealerships are from the 2025 model year, with inventory remaining high despite a 14-percent year-over-year rise in sales volume.

Nice machines but a bit pricey.
I’m surprised this story isn’t about Cadillac having a 113 day supply of vehicles, worse than the other cure brands.
