GM Europe Appoints Pere Brugal As New President And Managing Director

GM announced on Monday that Pere Brugal is the new President and Managing Director of General Motors Europe, effective immediately.

“As we enter our next phase of growth, our focus is clear: advancing innovation, expanding our presence, and strengthening our connections across key European markets,” General Motors Europe said in a LinkedIn post. “With Pere’s rich knowledge of the region, deep insights and relationships, and proven track record in setting up new distribution and sales models, he is well-equipped to lead GM Europe forward.”

Brugal is replacing Jacklyn McQuaid, who is the new global leader of the Buick and GMC brands. “We also want to express our deep gratitude to Jaclyn McQuaid, who, over the past two years, has played a crucial role in our return to Europe, leading our entry into new markets and establishing a solid foundation that forms the basis for a successful business,” GM Europe continued on social media. “Her outstanding leadership in crafting a compelling vision and building a talented team has set us up for continued success.”

Pere Brugal, who has been with The General since August 2023, was previously the chief commercial officer of GM Europe. His background in the automotive business is primarily with EVs, having worked for the European business units of BYD and Tesla. Since GM is committed to serving the European market exclusively with EVs, Brugal’s experience is a good fit for his new role.

To recap GM’s recent history in Europe, the conglomerate pulled out of the European market in 2017 after offloading the Opel and Vauxhall brands to Groupe PSA (now part of Stellantis) back in 2017. Cadillac and Corvette remained available in the region, but in a very limited capacity. General Motors CEO Mary Barra showed intent in 2022 to return to Europe as an “all-EV player” and has since launched Cadillac EVs in a handful of markets, including France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Sweden. It’s unclear whether GM intends to market EVs under any brands other than Cadillac in Europe in the near future.
