GM Confirms Development Of Two Chevy Hybrids In Brazil

During the announcement of its major investment in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, General Motors confirmed the development of two upcoming Chevy hybrids in Brazil.

The automaker’s South American subsidiary officially announced that it is developing two upcoming Chevrolet hybrid vehicles in Brazil as part of the company’s current investment cycle between 2024 and 2028, which will mark the largest transformation of GM’s local business with new technologies and sustainable mobility solutions. The vehicles will be “flexible hybrids” with a mild-hybrid propulsion system coupled with a combustion engine powered by gasoline or ethanol.

“We will start local production with two mild-hybrid models, which will allow access to this new technology to a larger potential number of consumers,” said President of GM South America, Santiago Chamorro. “We also plan to expand the electric vehicle line, starting in 2025. Our goal is to meet the most diverse customer needs,” he added.

In particular, the development of the upcoming two Chevy hybrids is being carried out at the GM Brazil Technology Center located within the GM São Caetano do Sul complex and is framed in the “new technologies” section of the investment scheme. In fact, GM has stated that Brazil will be the first market in the world to offer the flexible hybrid propulsion technology developed locally by the company’s engineering team.

Although the company has not revealed any details about the upcoming two Chevy hybrid vehicles it is preparing in Brazil, the flex-fuel hybrid engine technology is expected to come standard in the two new crossovers being developed by the Brazilian subsidiary. These are the Chevy Onix crossover variant – whose manufacturing investment has already been announced at the GM Gravataí plant – and the upcoming Chevy compact crossover planned for that market, which will be manufactured in São Caetano do Sul.

In any case, the upcoming two Chevy hybrids developed in Brazil will use an evolution of the GEM platform that underpins the current locally manufactured Chevy Onix, Chevy Tracker and Chevy Montana. As such, production of the flex-fuel hybrid models will strengthen GM’s vehicle portfolio in the country and represents an advancement of the company’s commitment to decarbonization, combining the benefits of biofuels and electrification.

  • This is an American assembly plant by GM, so if they have the needed Federal mandated safety features, sell them domestically.

  • For those thinking that gm has been very slow on the hybrid train, they're right.

    For reference, Ford has been offering hybrid vehicles since 2004.

  • Had 2010 gmc hybrid pick up. Very good hybrid battery got 14 years out of that truck. People thought that that was too early for the Hybrid’s. They build them three years.

    All of them were tossed for sure by Mr Reuss
    And now, who can explain why GM China launched the NG 2025 Chevy Equinox Hybrid and GM Norht America did not?
    It clearly shows that all of the eggs were put in the EV basket.
