GM Catching Up To Ford In EV Sales

GM sold almost 21,000 all-electric vehicles in the U.S. market during the months of July and August during the 2024 calendar year, giving it a significant boost in the EV sales race and placing it just behind Ford. General Motors’ EV sales increase roughly 70 percent year-over-year in August. This recent build-up in EV sales arrives amid lower-than-expected demand for all-electric models in the U.S. and a change in tack for The General with regard to its electrification strategy.

According to a report from CNBC, the latest GM EV sales figures position General Motors roughly 2,000 units behind Ford through the month of August. Ford sold 23,957 units during the second quarter of 2024, as compared to 21,930 units sold for General Motors during the same time period. Nevertheless, The General still has quite a bit of catch-up if it wants to lead in the all-electric segment, trailing Hyundai / Kia by roughly 20,000 units. Meanwhile, Tesla remains at the head of the pack in terms of EV sales volume in the U.S., with Motor Intelligence estimating 164,000 Teslas sold during Q2 of the 2024 calendar year. To put that in perspective, Tesla moved around double the EV sales volume of General Motors, Hyundai / Kia, and Ford combined during the same time frame.

Regardless, General Motors remains confident in its EV sales progress.

“We have momentum on our side,” said General Motors president of global markets, Rory Harvey, per CNBC. “We anticipate quarter four will be strong in terms of EV adoption. So, we’re looking forward to that close, and looking forward to taking a disproportionate share of the upside.”

GM is now rolling out a wide portfolio of new EV models, including the $35,000 Chevy Equinox EV, touted as the most-affordable all-electric vehicle available in the U.S. with an estimated range-per-charge greater than 315 miles, all the way up to the $340,000 Cadillac Celestiq ultra-luxury sedan. Other notable offerings include the GMC Hummer EV off-roader, the Chevy Silverado EV pickup, and the Cadillac Lyriq crossover.

GM’s EV plans have changed dramatically this year, with The General downgrading its near-term production target to 200,000 – 250,000 EVs this year, as well an announcement that it will reintroduce plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to its North American portfolio to help bridge the gap to full electrification as the broader EV charging network continues to develop.

    2. GM has 3 that are 6 figures (Hummer, Sierra, and Silverado, i.e., exotic car priced), and one that is $20k more than the Mach E under the Cadillac name. If GM is catching up with only a very recent release of the Equinox and Blazer its not something to sneeze at.

  2. Hyundai and Kia are two companies, not sure why the media wants to combine both. GM is ahead of both of them individually.

    1. Both Hyundai and Kia (also Genesis) are under HMG umbrella. They are same company.

    2. Hyundai and Kia are sister companies and like Nah said below, part of Hyundai Motor Company. I don’t know if you realized typically when Hyundai releases a new model, shortly after Kia releases their version of the same platform (or vice versa). Much like GM does with Chevrolet and GMC.

  4. GM has good vehicles that are close to being great overall vehicles in the EV segment.
Current marketplace issues is that they need faster DC Charging. The Celestiq,Lyriq, Optiq, Nox, and Blazer need to charge at 250kW at bare minimum.

Also, they cannot switch to NACS ports soon enough!!!

    1. Not necessarily so. Most EV owners just charge at their homes overnight at Level 2, and some for free. Why reduce battery life with a heavy charge power? Do you eat twenty pounds of dinner in ten minutes? Then don’t over feed any EV battery!

GM is doing a superb job! Can you do it better?

  6. For EV sales, there’s Tesla; then there’s everyone else. For hybrid sales, there’s Toyota; then there’s everyone else.
GM committed a terrible mistake by discontinuing both the Bolt and the Volt. They would have had affordable offerings in both the EV and the hybrid segments.

Soon the Cadillac Vistiq and Escalade IQ will commence production.
