Another long-running rivalry in the automotive industry involves Chevrolet vs. Toyota. It’s a domestic brand facing off against a foreign one, even if both, rather ironically, build models in and outside the States. The two auto brands compete in many segments, including the growing all-electric vehicle market. We’ll see how they fare against each other by looking at raw Chevy vs. Toyota sales figures for the second quarter of 2024.
During Q2 2024, total Chevy sales in the U.S. market were flat at 452,111 deliveries, while Toyota sales grew nine percent to 532,809 units, outselling the Bow Tie brand by about 81K units.

As has been the case for a long time now, the Chevy Silverado was again the best-selling model for the Bow Tie brand by a wide margin, netting 148,916 units to account for a third of overall sales. The most popular Toyota model was the RAV4 with 123,473 deliveries during the quarter, impressive for a non-truck model. RAV4 sales alone accounted for nearly a quarter of all sales for the Japanese automaker’s mainstream brand. Add in the Camry at 76,905 units and that percentage goes to over a third. So, while the full-size truck line for Chevy continues to represent the Bow Tie brand and GM’s bread-and-butter from sales volume and financial standpoints, Toyota’s best-selling crossover and sedan combine to fit that bill.

The Chevy vehicle to experience the largest sales growth was far and away the all-new Trax, growing a whopping 153 percent. The Trax has been a best-seller for GM overall, beating out all utility vehicles across its four automotive brands this quarter. The Colorado was the second-fastest to grow, growing 35 percent. The rest of the Bow Tie brand’s field posted either modest growth or a decline. Notably, all-electric Bolt EV and Bolt EUV sales are combined this quarter under the Bolt EV field.
Determining the winners for Toyota is a bit more challenging. Outliers posting the biggest jump in sales include an EV like the BZ4X as it continues to gain traction in the marketplace as most all EVs do because they are new, and recently introduced, models. Another outlier is the Land Cruiser, a storied nameplate that has returned after a three-year hiatus. That notwithstanding, longer-running models with the biggest increase in sales starts with the Venza at 142 percent. That model has been an off-and-on affair for Toyota, finally being retired to be replaced by the upcoming first-ever Crown Signia. Next is the Corolla Cross at 89 percent, which arrived as an indirect replacement for the discontinued CH-R. In the top three is the 86 at 68 percent, funny enough. It’s a small sports car co-developed with Subaru that markets its own iteration as the BRZ. Overall, Toyota had more models in the green than Chevy.
Sales of both marques were impacted by dropping sales of discontinued models. For Chevy that includes the Bolt EV and EUV, though a next-gen Chevy Bolt EV is on the way, along with the Camaro, till a next-generation Chevy Camaro arrives. For Toyota, that includes the Avalon, CH-R, and Venza. However, sales from EVs and new models balance out the discontinued nameplates, especially in Toyota’s case where it’s introduced direct and indirect replacements.

Since GMC models are often cross-shopped against Chevy models, with GMC even taking some sales away from Chevy as the two serve overlapping segments, then an argument could be made to include the two GM marques. Doing that puts GM ahead of Toyota by 79K units, with Chevy and GMC sales combining for 611,696 deliveries to Toyota’s 532,809.
Meanwhile, GM’s Cadillac luxury marque competes with Toyota Motor Corporation’s Lexus. Those sales are addressed in a separate sales analysis. GM’s Buick premium marque sits somewhere in-between.
Overall winner: Toyota
Cars
Chevy was vastly outsold by Toyota, which fronts twice as many models as the Bow Tie brand if you count discontinued models. Toyota beat out Chevy more than three-to-one in the passenger car segment in Q2 2024.

Crossovers
Considering the lucrative crossover market – one that has largely displaced traditional cars – Chevy was again outsold by Toyota as well during Q2 2024 by over 67K deliveries. Chevy crossover sales grew by just one percent to 178,937 units, while Toyota crossover volume grew 23 percent to 245,865 units. In this space we include the Toyota Sienna, a minivan representing a segment in which Chevy and GM overall does not compete.
We include the Sienna because only a handful of minivan models are sold in the U.S. at this point. Like the crossovers, minivans similarly are upright unibody vehicles designed to move people and their stuff. They differ by having sliding rear doors instead of regular opening ones, and are usually taller inside than crossovers, but similar enough in most other aspects.

Trucks
A big battle in the marketplace is in the truck arena. This space not only tracks full-size light duty and full-size heavy duty pickups, but midsize pickups, plus medium and heavy duty commercial trucks, too.
During Q2 2024, Chevy far outsold Toyota in terms of cumulative truck sales volume, moving 179,436 units, up 10 percent, compared to Toyota’s 90,118 deliveries, down five percent. The Bow Tie brand sold nearly twice as many trucks as Toyota, with its top-seller, the full-size Silverado, posting 148,916 deliveries, followed by the midsize Chevy Colorado moving 26,901 units.

Commercial Vans
Chevy sells one model in the commercial van segment, featuring passenger, cargo, and cutaway/chassis cab variants, while Toyota does not. Yet, the Chevy Express is an old vehicle tracing its roots to the 1990s and it, along with its GMC Savana corporate twin, remains the oldest model in its segment by a wide margin.
In fact, the two vans are the oldest GM vehicles currently in production. Even though The General previously entertained plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain, it may have canceled any such plans.
Nevertheless, GM has sold more than 3 million Chevy Express and GMC Savana units to date.

EVs
Looking at electric vehicles, Chevy outsold Toyota during Q2 2024, as the Chevy Bolt family exits the market and new Bow Tie brand models arrived to take their place over the past year. Sales were consequently down 20 percent for 11,217 deliveries.

Toyota EV posted 9,690 sales, down 22 percent, but with the following caveats.
Here we include two “crossover” models from Toyota that are not strictly EVs. First is the Prius hatchback, which is now offered with four powertrains: hybrid, plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV), all-electric EV, and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle (FCEV). Sales of those variants are not broken out. Second is the Mirai sedan, which is exclusively an FCEV. But we’ll stop there for now, as Toyota is poised to offer a hybrid powertrain option across its entire portfolio, and already does for many models.
Back to Toyota, its solely all-electric model is currently the bZ4X crossover. Counting just this pure EV gives the automaker 7,571 deliveries, with sales up 286 percent.

The GM Authority Take
Overall, Toyota outsold Chevy by 80,698 units during the second quarter of 2024. However, adding in cross-shopped GMC models flips the script, putting GM ahead by 78,887 deliveries.
It’s also worth noting that The General (Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC) was outsold by Toyota Motor Company (the Toyota brand plus Lexus) during the same timeframe by 4K units. Specifically, GM posted 696,086 deliveries to TMC’s 700,020 units during the quarter.
Both Chevy and Toyota continue to introduce new, refreshed, and next-generation models for their ICE and EV portfolios to confront competitive pressure from all avenues. Additionally, Toyota continues to introduce hybrid powertrains while beginning to work on expanding its portfolio of battery electric vehicles. In answer to Toyota and other automakers, GM is planning to launch PHEVs in 2027 as its own bridge between ICE and EV powertrain offerings.

Comments
Like I’ve said for a long time, toyota is the perfect car for grandparents and the older set. Like GM used to be, toyota uses the oldest technology possible so as not to upset their aged clientele. In our family, the only people with toyotas are baby boomers and older. None of us under 60 can afford the toyota tax, nor do we believe they are worth it.
Nine of the top ten fast selling vehicles in the US are Toyota models with mid-20 days supply of those products. The Honda Civic being the only non-Toyota/Lexus on the list. There isn’t another auto manufacturer on this planet that wouldn’t love to have that kind of demand problem…and clearly not just from “older clientele”.
Given their long and successful track record, it’s not likely they’re going to miss your business much.
You’re not wrong, but at one time Oldsmobiles used to also have the same problem being the #3 best seller in the 70s and part of the 80s, and look what happened to them. Oldsmobile was known for quality at one time (1950s-60s), then stated producing engines that failed under 20k miles (80s and up – hello tundra / tacoma / etc). They were known for young people, then only grandparents bought them (latest stats show Ford and toyota the product of choice for baby boomers, with Chevrolet and Honda being preferred by Gen Z).
It’s ok to be preferred by older people, like I said, it is the perfect brand for my grand parents. They also have the extra money for the toyota tax that the young do not.
You mean the Oldsmobile 5.7 Diesel and the V6-8-4 ugly engines that had problems? Yes. Those were pretty bad and could have failed under 20k miles…
At those days…were the heyday of QDR of Toyota. They were great value…and MUCH more efficient than B -body Chevrolet sedans…or Cadillacs at the time..Now, absolutely NOT.
You say Toyota outsold GM as a whole, but other Articles say Toyota sold 621,000 cars with Lexus compared to GM selling 696.000 autos. I don’t think Lexus sold 162.000 autos in the 2nd quarter. I think you better recheck your math!
Sums up Mary’s tenure.
Don’t they know cars don’t sell anymore? Guess 153,726 quarterly buyers didn’t get the memo.
This is what happens when a company ditches its entire car line. Toyota sells 300,000 Camrys and 250,000 Corollas a year. How can GM compensate for that volume? GM makes absurd decisions.
Toyota is is BUSINESS only because of their small car line-up, which is good if you need fuel efficiency. The Tundra does NOT sell as much units as the GMC/Chevrolet trucks… And no, QDR at Toyota is NOT what it used to be in the 80s and 90s…
What’s GM going to do now that the crossover craze begins to wane? I believe that some of their crossovers will get flatter and turn into mini wagons and eventually some will morph into sedans but they will call them something else.
And they’ll have more customers over at Lexus when those XT5 owners trade them in and to their shock aren’t leaving with a Lyriq.
GM sold “roughly 2.6 million vehicles” in the US in 2023 according to their reporting while Toyota sold a more precise 2,248,477. GM clearly beat the Japanese automaker last year but here’s the real story. Their combined sales were around 4.9 million. In 1977 GM sold 5,733,298 vehicles in the US so General Motors over the last 47 years has ceded massive market (over half) share to Toyota and others like Honda. Pretty much every vehicle Toyota sells today once would have been a GM vehicle. It’s a colossal decline and, as the 2024 numbers show, it’s continuing and apparently accelerating.
GMC/Chevrolet focus their business largely on Trucks and Full-size SUVs…and no, I do not think they would be going bankrupt…
Toyota sells MORE efficient and value for money cars…that is where most Malibu and Impala buyers are going.
I love the 1.5L Turbo.
Rocket, where did you get these numbers from? I had to look up this information myself and all I could find on goodcarbadcar was GMs per month numbers in the US in 1977 were only 1/4th of what they are now. While yes it is true they lost much of their market share to the Japanese and Koreans, also keep in mind the population in the US in 1977 was only 220 million. We are now at 333 million. They may have a smaller size of slice relative to the whole pie but the whole pie itself is larger. So does market share really matter in this case when speaking about the US?
Now if we talk about the global market then this is a different story. To this day I will never understand GMs reckless decision to prioritize the Chinese market in its entirety and abandon all other markets rather than choose to be globally competitive like Toyota, VW, and Hyundai. Its as if I moved all my money out of other stocks to put them into Bitcoin and when Bitcoin takes a dive I complain I am losing money. They seem to be realizing their mistake now trying to re-enter markets with EVs but with EVs losing popularity I am not so sure how this will turn out.
