Yet another long-running rivalry in the automotive industry involves Chevrolet vs. Honda. It’s a domestic brand facing off against another foreign one, even if both build models in and outside the States. Chevy and Honda both compete in many segments, including the growing all-electric vehicle market. We’ll see how they fare against one another by looking at raw Chevy vs. Honda sales figures for the second quarter of 2024.
During Q2 2024, total Chevy sales in the U.S. market were flat at 452,111 deliveries while Honda sales grew five percent to 322,815 units, putting the Bow Tie brand ahead by over 129K units.

As has been the case for a long time now, the Chevy Silverado was again the best-selling model for the Bow Tie brand by a wide margin, netting 148,916 units to account for a third of overall sales. The best-seller for Honda was the CR-V with 101,166 deliveries during the quarter, impressive for a non-truck model. CR-V sales alone accounted for nearly a third of all Honda sales. When adding in the 67,859 units of the Civic, that percentage jumps to over half. While the full-size truck line continues to represent the bread-and-butter for Chevy and for GM as a whole from sales volume and financial standpoints, a compact crossover and compact car line serve the same functions at Honda.

The Chevy vehicle to experience the largest sales growth was far and away the all-new Trax, growing a whopping 153 percent. The Trax has been a best-seller for GM overall, outselling all utility vehicles across its four automotive brands this quarter. The Colorado was the second-fastest to grow, up 35 percent. The rest of the Bow Tie brand’s field posted either modest growth or a decline. Note that sales figures for the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV are combined this quarter under the Bolt EV field.
For Honda, the Civic posted the biggest growth rate of 40 percent, followed closely by the HR-V with a 39 percent uptick. Both nameplates outpaced the rest of Honda’s portfolio. Overall, most Honda models were in the green, unlike Chevy.
Chevy sales were impacted by downturns of discontinued models, including the Bolt EV and EUV, though a next-gen Chevy Bolt EV is on the way, as is a next-generation Chevy Camaro. However, sales from EVs and new models balance out lost sales volume from discontinued nameplates.

Since GMC models are often cross-shopped against Chevy models, with GMC even taking some sales away from Chevy as the two serve overlapping segments, then including the two GM marques would make sense. That results in GM outselling Honda nearly two-to-one, with Chevy plus GMC sales adding up to 611,696 deliveries compared to Honda’s 322,815.

Crossovers
In the lucrative crossover market – one largely displacing traditional cars like sedans, Chevy was outsold by Honda during Q2 2024 by nearly 29K deliveries. Chevy crossover sales grew by just one percent to 178,937 units, while Honda crossover volume was up 11 percent to 207,536 units. In this space we include the Honda Odyssey, a minivan representing a segment in which Chevy and, more broadly, GM do not compete.
We include the Odyssey because only a handful of minivan models are sold in the U.S. at this point. Like the crossovers, minivans are similarly upright unibody vehicles designed to move people and their stuff. They differ by having sliding rear doors instead of regular opening ones, and are usually taller inside than crossovers, but similar enough in most other aspects.

Trucks
A big battle in the marketplace is in the truck arena. This space not only tracks full-size light duty and full-size heavy duty pickups, but midsize pickups, plus medium and heavy duty commercial trucks, too.
During Q2 2024, Chevy far outsold Honda, moving 179,436 units, up 10 percent, compared to Honda’s one pickup model – the Ridgeline – with 8,626 deliveries, down 41 percent. Commercial Vans
Chevy sells one commercial van – the Express – that’s offered in passenger, cargo, and cutaway/chassis cab variants. Meanwhile, Honda does not offer any commercial vans. Even so, the Chevy Express is an old vehicle tracing its roots to the 1990s and it, along with its GMC Savana corporate twin, remain the oldest model in its segment by a wide margin.
In fact, the two vans are the oldest GM vehicles currently in production. Even though The General previously entertained plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain, it may have canceled any such plans and instead elected to rebadge the BrightDrop vans as Chevys.

EVs
Chevy EV sales fell 20 percent for 11,217 deliveries during Q2 2024, outselling Honda by a significant margin thanks to offering more models, even as the Chevy Bolt family exits the market while new Chevy EVs arrive to take their place over the past year.

Ironically, Honda’s first all-electric utility is build by GM at GM’s factory and is underpinned by GM electric vehicle technology, including GM Ultium Drive motors and a GM Ultium battery pack, and competes against the Blazer EV.

The GM Authority Take
Overall, Chevy outsold Honda by 129,296 units during the second quarter of 2024. Adding in cross-shopped GMC models puts GM ahead by 288,881 deliveries, nearly twice as many units.
Moreover, The General (Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC) outpaced Honda Motor Company (the Honda brand plus Acura) during the same timeframe by nearly 340K units. Specifically, GM posted 696,086 deliveries to HMC’s 356,457 units this quarter.
Chevy continues to introduce new, refreshed, and next-generation models for its ICE and EV lineup to hold its own against competitors, while Honda plans to develop its own EV platforms and tech, while expanding its hybrid powertrain offerings. In answer to Honda and other automakers, GM says PHEVs will arrive in 2027 as its own bridge between ICE and EV.

Comments
Of course, GM is dropping the ball on key parts, performance, and durability of their vehicles. They’re experimenting too much.
(I.e.: why is Transmission failing on a brand new 2024 Traverse? Why 4-cylinder Turbo over a plain V6 on heavy vehicle?)
I test drove the 2024 Chevy Traverse, it whines and feels like it’s struggling. That itself was an hesitation for me.
Doesn’t Chevy sell more different vehicles than Honda? If so, I would expect them to have higher sales totals.
They also need to compare themselves to Toyota, but still with Accord sales down and soundly beating the even more bland Malibu. Also, the Civic seems to be a shining star for them, because they actually know how to build a small car for the masses. Nor does Honda have full-size trucks or suv’s
Long running rivals? Who are you try to kidd? Chevrolet should outsell all of the Japanese makes combined! The continuation of abysmal gm management and their program of outsourcing and off shoring product have soured potential customers.
Considering the accord only out, sold the Malibu by 2000 units, that should be enough for GM to redesign the Malibu for a new generation!
That’s with GM putting almost 0 effort in marketing and advertising the Malibu, and the current model is nearly a decade old (But still a good one)
Imagine what happens if GM tried harder
GM outsells Honda??? GM was the world leader. Now, where are they?
The only thing this tells me is that GM should NEVER have stopped the Bolt. A relaunch (if it happens – not much money in selling one) will be more complicated than a model update. They are killing brand (Bolt) loyalty. Stupid… stupid…stupid…
Come on GM… dump Mary!!!!
I wonder what will happen after they drop Chevrolet Malibu….
Sending sedan buyers all to Japanese and Korean competitors
Brilliant!!!
