A long-running rivalry in the luxury automobile world involves Cadillac vs. Mercedes-Benz. It’s a domestic luxury marque squaring off against a foreign one, with both competing in several segments, including the ever-growing all-electric vehicle market. We’ll see how they fare against one another by looking at raw Cadillac vs. Mercedes sales figures for the second quarter of 2024.
During Q2 2024, total Cadillac sales in the U.S. market were down one percent to 38,455 units, while Mercedes-Benz sales grew 10 percent to 84,662 units, thereby outselling Cadillac more than twofold.

For Mercedes, which has a substantially broader lineup of models and variants compared to Cadillac, the GLC-Class crossover led the way with 17,491 sales.

Notably, sales figures in this report include variants from Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance AMG and ultra-luxury Maybach sub-brands. Cadillac’s answer to the former is the V-Series. Also note that Mercedes-Benz Vans is not included in this comparison.
These sales numbers also list a couple of models discontinued by Mercedes, namely the A-Class, indirectly replaced by the CLA-Class, and the CLS-Class.

Cars
When it comes to passenger cars, Cadillac was vastly outsold by Mercedes just by virtue of a substantially broader product portfolio. The German brand outsold GM’s luxury marque by well over five-to-one here.

The German luxury marque’s cars are offered in sedan, coupe and convertible variants, while one (the E-Class) even offers sedan and wagon variants. Also, each of the two EVs here, namely the EQE and EQS, are offered in both sedan and crossover variants. Sales of those are not broken out for those iterations, making vehicle type comparisons impossible, but we included them in this section as well as the crossover section below.

Utilities
Utilities, comprised of unibody crossovers and body-on-frame SUVs, is largely displacing traditional cars like sedans, though Mercedes continues to offer models in both spaces. Regardless, the German luxury marque sold nearly twice as many utilities as Cadillac during Q2 2024.

Incidentally, both the GLC- and GLE-Classes are offered as traditional and crossover coupe body styles.

EVs
Mercedes far outsold Cadillac in the all-electric space during Q2 2024. Not included in this section are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), which Mercedes offers for its S-Class sedan as well as its GLC-Class and GLE-Class crossover and crossover coupe models. Sales of those are not broken out, but are instead included in their respective sections above. For its part, GM says PHEVs will arrive in 2027 as its own bridge between ICE and EV.
Cadillac’s first-ever and currently only EV, the Lyriq, accounted for 7,294 units – its best performance yet.

Comments
Disgraceful. That is nearly 200k units a year.
When you decide to cancel one of your best selling models in your not-so-favorite but equally important market (because we all are made very clear which market is your favorite and they get a replacement) in favor of a less popular electric version the right for you to complain about the competition surpassing you becomes null.
The same two vehicles that are MBZ top sellers (GLC vs XT5 and GLE vs XT6). The Lyric absolutely has a place at Cadillac, but shouldn’t be replacing an ICE model. GM needs to stop acting like its the size of Mazda. Its perfectly capable of producing BOTH competitive ICE and EV vehicles.
During my childhood in the 60’s and 70’s my dad said if you drove a Cadillac, you owned the road. 2024 it’s pathetic.
Mick1,
That reminds me of the salesman in the episode of Mad Men where Don Draper goes in to look at new Cadillacs. It’s 1962 and Don is looking at a beautiful new blue Coupe DeVille in a Manhattan Cadillac showroom. The salesman, Wayne Kirkby, inquires of Don “What are you in now?”. Draper replies “I have a Dodge” to which Mr. Kirkby says “Those are wonderful if you want to get somewhere….this is for when you’ve already arrived”.
It was a perfect summation of what Cadillac meant in 1962 America. It was the car for those who had arrived and in the show it symbolized exactly that for the character played by Jon Hamm. As a successful advertising executive on Madison Avenue whose career was flourishing, he had reached the pinnacle.
The scene can be viewed online by searching “Don Draper buys a 1962 Cadillac Coupe DeVille”
And the gap will widen even more. Cadillac got caught with its pants down a bit by their all electric platform and then realizing that was a bad decision. Mercedes has all bases covered and a better overall reputation. Cadillac has China develop the new XT5 and we get nothing but another extension of the old and current XT5…how does that happen?!?! All we can hope for is a plug in hybrid down the road. Very disappointing to me.
Would you guys stop blaming everything on EVs. Mercedes-Benz has been outselling Cadillac by these margins over the last decade, why are you guys acting surprised by this? You guys just look for any reason to mention EVs. Be origin and stop regurgitating tired talking points.
Sales will drop lower especially that the redesigned XT5 is NOT made in the USA and We are NOT looking into Mary’s Lyriq EV which she thinks will replace the XT5 .. She is a very suborn ,,she will kill Cadillac and General Motors
Cadillac is guaranteed to stick around as long as the ICE Escalade sells. That thing prints money.
When Johann Des Nychenn came to Cadillac, his intent was to play the long game for Cadillac’s sustainability. But as usual, GM went with what fill the coffers fast and he got booted. All that engineering money that went into the CT6 and it got pulled from the market prematurely.
Save for improvements in performance, the execution of the follow-ups to the CTS and ATS really didn’t move the marque forward in design and engineering or presentation; they basically got reskinned and then GM pushed them downmarket to compete on price. A luxury marque doesn’t do that!
CADILLAC NO LONGER BUILDS A LUXURY CAR WHAT RICH PEOPLE WANT. THE MARKET HAS WANTED THE CADILLAC CT8 FOR YEARS. NOW THE PREMIUM CAR IN AMERICA IS A USED CT6 PLATINUM. THEY HAVE WANTED A NEW XLR AND THAT CORVETTE WOULD HAVE MADE AN EXCELLENT REWORK. ALL THERE IS AVAILABLE WITH A CADILLAC NAME IS A BUNCH OF CHEVROLET CONVERSIONS. I AM STILL DRIVING MY 2015 XTS AND THE NEW CAR I AM LOOKING FOR IS A 2019 OR 2020 BLACK PLATINUM CT6. IF I DON’T FIND ONE I WILL DRIVE MY PRESENT ONE UNTIL THE WHEELS FALL OFF OF IT. I DO NOT WANT AN ELECTRIC CAR OR THE PROBLEMS WITH THE WAIT TIME FOR CHARGING.
The Problem of Cadillac is that they only look at the mirror and said we are the only and the best, but the fact is all competitors are overtake them and left the Cad back.
I Asked my Son who is 7 Years old and he suggests;
Return the CT6 with new desighn and launch another big size Sedan CT7 or CT9 as Flagship to compete the S, A8 And 7 Series ,
change the CT4 Interior, Change the old and ugly interior of XT6 and XT5 – Stop the current design of XT5 (IT IS ENOUGH)
– do not over late production of all new models
– Provide Cadillac Luxury VAN, Provide many interior choices
– Fire the Marketing Team and hire with creative people who really love Cadillac Cars and History
– Fire the Old school Management of Cadillac and GM with and replace with younger and inspired management and stop acting that you are the only one in the market.
– Do not overprice your cars and know your market location.
– balance between ICE and EV
– Do not take tooooo much time to lunch and produce your cars, because customers will not wait.
otherwise, “Goodbey to the motor world, We Are Out” will be your last slogan
