The Z06 trim level returned to the Chevy Corvette for the 2006 model year after a hiatus with the Corvette’s redesign in 2005. The new Z06 was built with a focus on weight savings, utilizing magnesium for the roof support structure, a magnesium-alloy engine cradle, and an aluminum frame thirty percent lighter than on the base Corvette. The Z06 also benefitted from a unique front fascia, bigger air intakes, and wider fenders to house larger wheels and tires. Carbon fiber was used for the front fenders, and the floor was a sandwich of carbon fiber and balsa wood. The battery was moved to the cargo area aft of the rear wheels. In a further effort to minimize weight, sound deadening material was used sparingly, and no power adjustment was available for the passenger seat.
Under the hood, the Chevy Corvette Z06 had an all-aluminum Small Block displacing 427 cubic inches, the largest Small Block Chevy had ever made. Hand assembled, the LS7 V8 had titanium valves and piston rods, 11.0:1 compression, a 7,000 rpm redline, and cranked out 505 horsepower. The sole transmission for the Z06 was the six-speed manual. According to Car and Driver magazine, the Z06 could launch from a dead stop to sixty miles per hour in a scant 3.6 seconds, to 100 mph in 7.9 ticks, going on to eclipse the 150 mph mark in 17.5 seconds. Stopping duties were handled by fourteen-inch, six-piston front disc brakes, and thirteen-inch, four-piston rear discs, enabling the Z06 to stop from 70 miles per hour in 162 feet. The Z06 had equally impressive handling, producing a 0.98 g rating on the skidpad.
The Chevy Corvette Z06 was little changed for the 2007 model year. Head-up display was standard, while two-tone interior trim in Ebony with red or Ebony with gray was available as a no-cost option.
