Vehicle-to-everything, or V2X, technologies are at the heart of a new U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) plan that will see vehicles equipped with electronics to constantly communicate with other vehicles, immobile sensors along roads, and smartphones and other devices nearby.
The V2X communication scheme, dubbed the “Saving Lives with Connectivity” plan, is intended to reduce injuries and deaths in vehicle crashes by providing drivers with safety alerts and other crash-avoidance information.
Roadway V2X is already in operation on a small scale in a few locations, but the eventual goal is “a safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation system through the national, widespread deployment of interoperable V2X technologies” per Dr. Robert Hampshire, a research and technology official. The tech can be used not only to alert drivers, but also to send useful data to advanced safety systems in a vehicle.
The plan, if successfully implemented, will be rolled out in three stages. The first will see two major car companies brought onboard with the plan, along with deployment of the tech to 20 percent of U.S. highways and 25 percent of major city intersections, to be completed by 2029. The next stage, lasting until 2031, will roughly double the deployment, while the last stage, completed in 2036, will see full highway V2X integration and six automakers agreeing to include the technology in their new vehicles.
The USDOT says it will roll out the V2X deployment while “maintaining privacy and consumer protection,” though undoubtedly some commentators will raise the possibility of continuous government surveillance of citizens’ movements through the system once it is more widely known.
Deployment of V2X will “require tens of millions of dollars of investment” according to Federal Highway Administration chief Shailen Bhatt. However, as he points out, this is a small fraction of the annual budget of billions of dollars spent on highway infrastructure in the United States already. $60 million in taxpayer money has already been earmarked for grants to companies developing vehicle-to-everything technology.
Bhatt remarked that the plan represents “a framework for all of us to continue to work together toward the same goal of accelerating V2X deployment to save lives on our nation’s roadways.”
One type of GM V2X technology was revealed by Buick back in 2020, with deployments in Chinese passenger vehicles, with the protocol enabled by GM Global B electronic architecture – indicating The General will likely be prepared to participate in the plan.

Dystopian BS.
As long as this can be disabled and removed then I’m ok with it.
The USDOT does everything except fix our crumbling infrastructure.
‘Cuz that’s the states’ responsibility. The Feds supply money; the states do the rest.
Think you missed the point of my post but thank you for the civics lesson.
Maybe dumb people shouldn’t drive.
2017 CTS came with V2V as standard equipment.

For all you who think that a certain country in the east becoming world leader won’t land in consequences greater than just US manufacturing going out of business? Here you go. An example of a dystopian society influencing ours to become like it. Remember the citizens of said country were also told “its for your safety” when they began monitoring everything the citizens posted online behind the great firewall.
Every month, a secret society of world leaders gets together to plan how to maintain their control over us. I saw it on an episode of Pinky and the Brain, so it must be true.
Ahh yes. I know this theory from the Metal Gear franchise. They call them the Philosophers, an organization of elites from the US, China, and the Soviet Union formed after the Great War (WW1). The US branch of that organization known as the Patriots. In the real world, the group is called the Illuminati.
I’m not one that is into conspiracy theories, but Xi Jinping has referred to Bill Gates as a close friend. And he heavily pushed for the vaccine mandate. Let that sink in for a bit…
Will start with “two major car companies brought onboard with the plan” which means that 2 major companies will be forced to adopt the plan. Another is would be that just like everything else high tech, when a glitch happens, all hell breaks loose & probably amount to injuries/death.
There was already a story about ford motor company applying for a patent for this technology … is GM the second? Or will it be Toyota?
Im all for safer roads and highways ! Not so much for unsafe and reckless driving and idiots that forgot driving is a privilege not a right !
Oh Boy ! Another “mandate” from unelected Bureaucrats heading up another omnipotent Federal Agency. This one guaranteed to track your every move wherever you are and Guarandamnteed to add how many Thousands of Dollars to the cost of a new Vehicle. Democrats at work…..again !
All of these spy on Americans systems are proposed and installed by unelected bureaucrats. We must elect a President and Congressional leaders that will take control back and protect our privacy and freedoms…!!!
Definitely keeping my 2002 Dodge RAM as long as I can keep it running.
