Chevy commanded 61 percent of total GM utility sales during the quarter, followed by GMC at 17 percent of sales, Buick at 13 percent, and Cadillac at nine percent.
In terms of sales volume, Chevy accounted for four of the top five models among the 26 total utilities, while the top five were responsible for 51 percent of all GM utility sales.
Notably, though, three utilities have been discontinued, all being crossovers. That includes the Buick Encore, which the all-new Buick Envista indirectly replaces, while production is officially over for the current generation Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV duo.
The all-new subcompact Chevy Trax jumped to the top for the first time ever with a 153 percent leap in sales to 52,875 units, leading all utilities. The Bow Tie brand’s new entry-level model edged out the compact Chevy Equinox, posting a one percent slip to 52,270 units. It was followed by the subcompact-plus Chevy Trailblazer with an 18 percent dip to 27,891 units. The GMC Terrain compact crossover posted a 38 percent jump for 27,259 deliveries, and Chevy Tahoe full-size SUV sales fell 14 percent slide to 25,119 units.
The Bow Tie brand’s three smallest crossovers alone accounted for 38 percent, or nearly three-fifths, of overall GM utility sales in the U.S.
GM sells six body-on-frame SUVs across its divisions in the U.S.: the regular-length Chevy Tahoe and extended-length Chevy Suburban, the regular-length GMC Yukon and extended-length Yukon XL, and the regular-length Cadillac Escalade and extended-length Escalade ESV. Buick does not sell body-on-frame SUVs but only markets crossovers in North America.
(Sometimes, U.S. sales figures are not broken out for the Yukon and Yukon XL but are combined, like this quarter. The same is true for U.S. sales figures of the Escalade and Escalade ESV, which are also combined this quarter.)

Go Malibu!!
With zero love, it outsold every SUV/CUV but the Trax and Equinox which are constantly blasted all over the place.
The Trax is a nice looking SUV. I think it’s pitiful it’s only offered in FWD. GM Put out a statement that previous models over 70% were FWD that’s why there’s no AWD. I think it had to do more with a horrid AWD system in the Trax and the encode.
John: Question. Do you think the reason the Trax is selling so well is due to the looks or due to the price? I think it’s a decent looking crossover if that’s what you like, but it has enough ugly black plastic hanging on it to kill a horse. But I don’t think it’s the looks as much as it’s the price. Thus adding AWD when maybe 25 to 30% of buyers could use it would only add to the price. IMO, a higher price would kill off some of the sales.
From when the new Trax was introduced, they have been attempting to promote it as more of a “car” or “hatch” like car to replace the Sonic/Cruze/Spark at the bottom of Chevy’s line. Sorry, I’m not buying that. This Trax, even with the 3 cyl, still isn’t as efficient at the others were. Getting a combined average of 32 MPG is terrible.
Good points. The last Trax was butt ugly. The price I feel is the biggest attraction then the appearance. I don’t much more about it other than it’s built in Korea. Not sure how the quality is. I had an HHR years back that I think was built in Mexico, and the blazer is built there now. My HHR was trouble free hope the blazer is
Did my part. We picked up my wife’s Radiant Red Tintcoat 2024 Cadillac XT4 Premium Luxury at Cadillac of Memphis today. Had waited two months as it was “in transit” from Kansas City. Very good deal, great sales experience from “Gerald”. I now get her hand me down 2020 Equinox LT (38K miles). College son uses his 2017 Camaro RS sparingly (28K miles). Our bought new 2002 Impala (200,000 miles) getting repairs to give someone a good deal on a decent used car. GM all the way. “Ice, Ice, Baby.”
Davy G: Have you ever driven an EV?
I thought the Envisra might get a little more traction than we’re seeing. The Trax is prettier, but the Envista has more amenities.
Davey: I actually like the Envista better. More car like and you can get it fully painted (Avenir) or at least with the shiny black (ST). But the Trax only comes with all that cheap black plastic. But yes, I thought the Envista would sell better.
Didn’t say it, at least this time, but I have the Trailblazer with the 1.3. The extra HP and torque make a difference. Tried both the Trax and Envista. Couldn’t make a case for changing. By the way, 33.7 mpg combined, mostly city.
And the top four are made outside of the US. Way to go Barra and gm!
Maybe with sales down on the trailblazer I will get my RS headrest part no 42766582 I’ve have order for over a year .
GMA always has the strangest models in a category.
Like while the Bolt EV is a good car, it’s not a “utility” vehicle.
rEV: There’s certainly no clear lines anymore between what they call a car/hatch, a CUV and an SUV. When it comes to the Bolt twins, the EUV certainly has a more CUV look while the Bolt EV (like mine) is way more small car hatch vibe.
This came up on here I think back a few months ago. Whoever it was trying to say the Bolt was an SUV, I asked them if they would call the Honda Fit or the Sonic hatch or the Ford C-Max (all no longer made) or the VW Golf SUV’s. Of course they said no, so I asked why they would call the Bolt EV an SUV, to which I got no answer.
It’s all about marketing. They push the heck out of SUV/CUV’s and tell everyone that they need them. Buyers take the bait. So the manufacturers try to call everything an SUV/CUV now. Proof? Go on Chevy’s site and see if you can find the Bolt any more. They put them both under SUV’s.
cim88ser86, live in the corner of NE MS, small towns & somewhat rural. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an EV in the county & don’t know anyone who owns one. Nephew in Tupelo is longtime owner of a Prius, but I have never ridden in it. Biggest Chevy dealer in the area (Tupelo) has 42 new vehicles on his lot with 8 EV Blazer, 2 Eqiunox. They have been sitting there a while. Closest fast charging station (Tesla) is also 45 miles away in Tupelo. It also bothers me that China has so much of the rare earth minerals needed for battery production. I have driven a golf cart many moons ago when I was a teen. LOL. think there is a place in our world for EV & ICE. Need the correct balance.
