There’s something truly special about seeing an older vehicle transformed into a high-performance beast, and that’s exactly what we get with this turbocharged and LS-swapped 1984 Chevy Suburban. Featured in a video from the Finnegan’s Garage YouTube channel, this Suburban is a prime example of how a combination of the right parts can turn a classic into something completely unexpected. In this case, this ‘Burban is now a 10-second burnout machine.
The video, hosted by Mike Finnegan alongside his friend David Williams, kicks off with the story behind this 1984 Chevy Suburban, which David originally acquired in a trade for a motorcycle. The Suburban was already extensively modified by the time Williams got his hands on it, but that didn’t stop him from using it for an epic road trip from Florida to Alaska and back.
The focus of this particular episode is on enhancing the truck’s turbo system by swapping out the air-to-air intercooler for a more efficient air-to-water intercooler, enabling the reinstallation of the front grille and boosting performance even further.
Under the hood of this beast lies a 6.0L V8 engine sourced from a 2006 Chevy Express van, making it the LQ4 V8. This engine, combined with RHS LS3 port heads, a VSS Racing 7875 turbo, and a Holley Terminator X ECU, delivers a staggering 840 horsepower to the rear wheels. With a quarter-mile time of 10.3 seconds at speeds between 135 to 137 mph, this 4,680-pound truck is certainly no slouch.
Throughout the video, the team showcases the installation of the new air-to-water intercooler, which dramatically improves the Suburban’s performance thanks to lower air intake temperatures and sharper throttle response, as well as more power overall, although the exact power gains aren’t known. Nevertheless, the results are immediately noticeable, making an already powerful truck even more formidable.
And of course, what would a high-powered Suburban be without the ability to lay down some serious rubber? The video concludes with a display of the Suburban’s burnout prowess, so stick around for that:
