One-Owner, 400k-Mile 1996 Chevy Impala SS For Sale In Nebraska: Photos

A single-owner 1996 Chevy Impala SS was recently listed for sale online, sporting more than 400,000 miles on the clock. Despite the high mileage, this old-school Chevy looks to be in primo condition, with gorgeous original paint, a clean interior, rebuilt mechanicals, and a few choice modifications. The sedan is located near Omaha, Nebraska, and is listed with an asking price of $13,000.

“This is my baby,” the listing begins. Apparently, this Chevy sedan “spent her entire life in San Diego CA” before it was moved to Nebraska, and since then, it’s “been garaged and out of the weather.”

Starting with the exterior, we find the original Dark Cherry Metallic paint intact and gleaming, complemented by a hand-painted Impala SS logo and pinstripes and polished chrome trim around the perimeter of the side windows. Meanwhile, the silver five-spoke wheels look on-point in the corners. As far as mid-‘90s style goes, this Chevy Impala has it in spades.

The interior is equally as clean, showing off new grey leather seats, a gray dash, and gray door cards. All of the interior lighting bites were replaced with LEDs, and there are new Panasonic speakers up front. The dash pad looks to be in perfect condition as well.

The listing also states that the engine and automatic transmission were both replaced with remanufactured units, with the remanufactured engine dropping in around the 290,000-mile mark. Other upgrades include a custom torque converter, extended upper and lower rear control arms, a few minor intake and exhaust mods, Moser axles, Bilstein shocks, Vogtland springs, and a Camaro EGR valve.

By the look of it, this 1996 Chevy Impala was well taken care of throughout the years, and while the mileage may be high, the overall condition is surprisingly good. Check out the full listing here.

See, GM used to know how to build good engines and transmissions!

they still do. they just ruin them with stupid AFM components and shoddy assembly. the engines havent changed much at all – small blocks. the transmission either – same design, just cram more gears. oddly enough the addition of new gears has not been the failure point.

I wanted one of these sooooo bad when they were current. They sure don’t build ’em like that anymore. If I were in the market, sure, I think $13K is reasonable…

Clean car, not worth $13k!!! This is when GM was GM and built performance, style, excitement, and more…….Now all we get are a plethora of SUV’s with “small”/underpowered turbo engines.

My 1998 C/K my son drives has 252K miles on it as of today, when he rolled out of the garage to head to school.

With the 3.7L = 305 hp (Non-turbo) 3.5L = 400 hp (Twin Turbo), 3.0L also 400 hp (Twin Turbo), 2.7L = 325 hp (Single Turbo), 2.0L = 250 hp (Single Turbo), Etc. They may be small but seeing as these are right off the showroom floor, get great gas milage and have awesome torque values I can see how “small/underpowered” they are.

Looked even better in black and thank you Chevrolet General Manager Jim Perkins for pushing to get this version of the Impala made. He was a class act in every regard.

This generation of the Impala was the ugliest produced. Boated with a huge rear end.

And for those bragging about the performance off these, here’s the reality. 0-60 in around 7 seconds. Meanwhile, the 2025 Equinox many here hate on will perform 0-60 in around 8 seconds. Based on these minimal differences for family transportation, the Equinox isn’t so underpowered after all, especially considering they can get power from a tiny 1.5 4 cyl.

    Let that sink in!

GMC Fan: The difference? This has class. The new Equinox is just one more boring box. MPG’s not much different either and I’ll take “around” 7 seconds to 8 seconds.

Yeah, so? I’d rather drive that Impala than an Equinox and so would most true car guys. I had 5 fat GM wagons, 91-95, and 1 black ’96 S/S, all customized, and they are way cooler than any crappy little SUV or crossover. An EV can blow the doors off almost anything out there, but I’d rather drive an original ’55 Chevy with a pokey 265. It’s all a state of mind.

Lets see if a 2025 Equinox can do 400k miles. Some of em are going bad at 40k. Today most cars are garbage. I dont think i would ever want to own one. Thank god for leases.

0-60 in 7 seconds wasn’t bad at all for a 4200lb production car, you have to remember this was 90’s technology and besides the SS was faster than the BMW M3 at the time, and you can’t compare your piece of 💩 Equinox to these cars, these were the last of the V8, rear wheel drive, body on frame cars. Besides install some 373’s in the rear end of these cars, and all you’ll see in taillights. 🤣

1996 4100 lb low 15 second 1/4 mile. Not a race car but not bad for a 1996. HO Mustang didn’t run any better. With 3.73 gears and ram air setup it spanked the Camaro and Mustang in 96. Fact!

Real intelligence here!!! This has to be the most ignorant comparison I’ve ever read. You are comparing a 1996 Impala SS to a 2025 Equinox….almost 30 years of technological advancements and “YOUR” equinox still can’t beat it to 60 mph….

Those Impalas drove so nice, and floated down the road like a cloud. Let’s not even talk about how comfortable GM’s seats were in the 90 and early 2000’s!! Some of the best seats for long distance driving.

Always liked these, but with the extensive mods (not a fan of that) and such high miles, it’s only worth 13 grand if they can find the right person. Not worth half that IMO, but there’s a buyer for everything.

The King of its time. Wife wouldn’t trade her Mercury sable wagon for Impala SS. So, I tried to trade her for a newer model. LOL. I lost on both counts.

A 4100 lb. full framed grocery getter, that was absolutely a blast as a daily driver! I ordered one new in 1996. It has the better looking dash with gauges and tach and a floor shift center console. 94 & 95 both had digital dash and shifter on the column. Only change I made was a ram air setup and a set of 3.73 gears. That definitely woke it up! Surprised alot of folks with it 1/4 mile and top end. Good ol days of the past.

Bought new from Chevy dealer, one of the last built 1996 SS sedans in black with in-dash CD player. Replaced the car stereo with the factory in-dash cassette unit so I could install the GM 12-cd disc changer in trunk. Came with remote control unit which also allowed shuffle play between the discs. I also had the chrome plated factory wheels. Great car.

I’m ok with the modifications if it improves handling/performance .I think the price needs to be lower, but I think they are great road buggies! Black is the preferred color—they really stand out!

Reedman Chevrolet in Langhorne, Pa. had a number of leftover 1996 models it wanted to move out. They were 23K and change. I test drove one at a different dealership and thought it was great. Plenty fast and comfortable. Only thing it needed was a louder exhaust. The wife didn’t like it ( first time she said no to my car craziness) so I dropped the idea and went for a new 4dr Yukon. Fast forward, she recently gave me the green light on a 2024 Camaro 2SS Convertible with a speeder and dual mode. That is one performance monster.

Junkyard replacement probably. We once had a 94 Voyager that had a minor rear end collision breaking both tail lights. We went to a junkyard and found a Caravan of the same era (which had visually different tail lights but the same size) and we used them. Cost only $10.

I changed it because I liked it better, also changed the window control panels to black. And yes, I’m the owner of this beauty.

94,95,96 SS only came in gray interior. Also, the air intakes not original.

Oh how I miss the GM B-bodies. My all time favorite of these siblings is the Fleetwood Brougham. Although that car is actually a D-body which was an extended version of the B-platform. That car was the last of the land yacht Caddys.

I tried to get my dad to buy one of the Impalas or Roadmasters when they came out, he said no. He had just retired and wanted a smaller car. He ended up buying a front drive V-8 Cadillac Seville with the long hood and short trunk (Monte Carlo style). It was a beautiful car and ran well but it had a vibration or shimmie in the front end that the dealer could never fix. He traded it for a Buick Park Avenue with 3800. He said it was the best car he ever owned.

My Brother has a 2004 Chevy Impala Base with a 3.8 V-6 engine that he bought new. The car is still driven daily, and has over 400,000 miles driven with the original engine and transmission. To me, GM has made some very dependable cars and trucks over the years.

Dude must be smoking meth to think a car with 400k miles is worth 13 grand. I don’t care it was maintained. Car is worth 2-3 grand.

And with a replacement engine? I think the car might have been driven harder than you think it would have.
Hard pass. I would rather get one with 300k and one with the same engine on it….without abuse, and pay MUCH LESS.

2003 Chevy Z71 Tahoe with +384K miles with original transmission and reman GM 5.3L at 304K. Towed a 4500 lb boat for 180K miles and was driven in Midwest winter conditions and later on in the mountains of Montana. Always changed the transmission fluid every year and the filter screen at 50K. It has become a back country hunting vehicle in the off road NFS and Montana State land environment.
