Back in June, GM Authority exclusively reported that General Motors is preparing a new 2025 Chevy D-Max for Ecuador, and now we know that Chevrolet’s upcoming midsize pickup truck will likely be imported to the South American country from China.
The automaker’s Ecuadorian subsidiary further highlighted what the company’s transition will look like after the end of its manufacturing operations in the country, revealing to El Universo that the transformation of GM’s Ecuadorian business involves importing all of its models from other countries – primarily from China. This includes a high-volume source to supply the new 2025 Chevy D-Max, which is likely to be imported from the Asian country.
“Currently, 12.5 percent of the models that Chevrolet sells in the country are imported from China. The rest of the models come from Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, the United States, Mexico and Japan, which together represent 35 percent,” said GM Ecuador Communications Head, Juan Fernando Reinoso. “Following the end of production [in Quito], our entire portfolio will be imported from these same sources,” he added.
The impending closure of the GM OBB plant on August 31st will end local production of the successful second-generation Chevy D-Max, the best-selling vehicle in the entire Ecuadorian automotive industry for several consecutive years. The production plan at the facility will allow to satisfy demand for the model for the rest of 2024, while the launch of a new, imported 2025 Chevy D-Max is in preparation for early next year.
In our previous report, we explained that GM currently has two different midsize pickup models that could maintain the D-Max nameplate in the Ecuadorian market: the base variants of the Brazilian Chevy S10, and the Chevy S10 Max sold in Mexico imported from China. The announcement by GM Ecuador’s spokesperson increases the likelihood that the new 2025 Chevy D-Max could turn out to be the S10 Max manufactured by its Chinese business partner SAIC Motor.
In addition, it is worth noting that on May 1st, a Free Trade Agreement between Ecuador and China came into effect, which will substantially increase the level of imports to the nation from the Asian country. All this indicates that the next 2025 Chevy D-Max for Ecuador would be a derivative of the Chinese-made S10 Max configured with a Diesel engine, to meet the official description of being “a little bigger,” incorporating “improved technology” and boasting “similar mechanical components” to those of the current D-Max.
