Modified GMC Typhoon For Sale In Texas

These days, it’s not all that uncommon for SUVs and pickups to be packing some serious heat. However, back in the early ’90s, the go-fast utility vehicle segment was far more limited, and in fact, one could argue that the GMC Typhoon was the first to really set the standard. Now, this well-preserved 1992 Typhoon is listed for sale in a new online auction.
Based on the S15 GMC Jimmy and produced for only a few model years between 1992 and 1993, the GMC Typhoon was well ahead of its time, cradling the turbocharged 4.3L LB4 V6 gasoline engine and doling out 280 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque. The V6 engine was essentially a modified version of the Vortec engine powering the Jimmy, and was upgraded with a Mitsubishi turbocharger pushing out 14 psi of boost through a Garrett water / air intercooler. Output was routed through the 4L60 four-speed automatic transmission and BorgWarner transfer case before hitting all four wheels, sending the Typhoon from 0 to 60 mph in a little over five seconds – impressive stuff, especially for the early ’90s.
This particular example brings all those goodies and more, all with roughly 44,500 miles on the odometer. That’s relatively low for a vehicle that’s over three decades old, and looking over the photos, this particular example looks to be in pretty good shape.
This particular example is also equipped with a few modifications, including a new exhaust, an aftermarket differential cover, new polyurethane suspension bushings, a repainted grille, a Momo steering wheel, and a Pioneer touchscreen, among a few other bits and pieces. The exterior also shows off a set of C4 Chevy Corvette ZR1 wheels, sized at 17 inches in diameter.
Now, this 1992 GMC Typhoon is listed for sale on cars & bids, with the current highest bid of nine placed (8/6/2024) set at $15,000. The car is offered at reserve. The auction will end this coming Monday.

Great trucks. We had a Blazer Xtreme with 5-speed stick. Nice size and roomy interior. No awd or turbo but nice vehicle. I’d buy a new one if they still made them.
Nice looking truck except for the wheels.
