Lucid Developing Sub-$50k Midsize Crossover Rivaling Chevy Blazer EV

California-based EV maker Lucid is in the midst of developing a new, more affordable midsize crossover that could serve as a direct rival to the Chevy Blazer EV. The new sub-$50,000 crossover is part of the automaker’s strategy to broaden its market appeal, and reportedly includes a total of three new models. The new midsize crossover is expected to launch in late 2026.

This approach mirrors that of Tesla, which first introduced a high-end, premium sedan before moving downmarket with more accessible, higher-volume vehicles. The introduction of the automaker’s Air sedan set the stage for the brand’s luxury EV offerings, but now Lucid aims to capture a larger share of the market by targeting younger buyers with more affordable and athletic vehicles.

According to a report from CarBuzz, Derek Jenkins, Lucid’s Senior Vice President of Design and Brand, has provided some insight into the automaker’s upcoming midsize crossover. Jenkins noted that the new model will appeal to a younger demographic with its athletic design and will incorporate rugged features to enhance its versatility. This positions the new Lucid crossover as a strong competitor to not only the Chevy Blazer EV but also other contenders in the midsize EV market, such as the Rivian R2 and even the Cadillac Lyriq, particularly if the pricing extends beyond the $60,000 mark with options.

In addition to the midsize crossover, the automaker’s new program will also introduce a sedan aimed at competing with the Tesla Model 3. The third model in this trio remains under wraps, though Jenkins hinted that it could have a more rugged, off-road-oriented character.

“The off-road space is going to continue to morph and evolve,” Jenkins told CarBuzz. “You’re going to have products that are trying to cater to the fringe of off-roading, like rock crawling, and then you have your normal crossover products.”

  1. Too little, WAY too late.

  2. I expect LUCID’s SUV will have excellent range. We may get a EV as a town car and probably would be nice to have if gas prices continue to soar with current buffoons in the White House still in charge.

    1. It doesn’t matter who the buffoon is in the White House when it comes to gas or electric vehicles. One is going to purchase what one feels comfortable and safe with. After seeing the number of EV’s losing power and stranded on the roadsides here in Florida due to the unusual heat wave we’ve been having lately, I’ll keep my V6 ICE. The batteries aren’t keeping their charge and the same happened in the North with the extreme cold last winter.

  3. Very blasé looking. I’ll keep my Blazer.

  4. Crossover model #4,362. Boring auto industry now.

  5. Yet another oversized vehicle that barely fits in a parking spot, exclusively for customers with oversized wallets. Can’t these people figure out that those looking for EV’s want smaller, more efficient vehicles?

Make a competitor to the Equinox EV or Cadillac Opiq and maybe they’ll find more customers.

  6. Lucid is lucky the Arabs are patient with it and still injecting cash. I hope this model is not too little too late because I am not very bullish with Lucid as I am with Rivian. I hope they pull through though. Their cars are truly beautiful and well put together.

  9. Might have to add Lucid to my watch list. One of few EV makers still supporting CarPlay.

  10. Why mention the Blazer when clearly a Cadillac or future Buick model would be the competition.
