Here’s Why The C8 Corvette ZR1 Doesn’t Have A Front Trunk

The 2025 Corvette ZR1 just got its big reveal last week, debuting the latest go-faster variant for the mid-engine C8 Corvette lineup. The specs are impressive, with GM framing the new ZR1 as the fastest and most powerful production vehicle to ever wear the Corvette nameplate. All that power is matched with a long list of complementary bits and pieces, including new aero. Notably, the C8 Corvette ZR1 doesn’t have a front trunk, either.
For those readers who may be unaware, all three of the previous C8 variants (C8 Stingray, C8 Z06, and C8 E-Ray) feature a front trunk, which is essentially an open space in the nose of the vehicle that provides additional cargo room in the absence of a front-mounted engine (all C8 variants are mid-engined). The C8 Corvette ZR1, however, is different, and doesn’t include a front trunk.
The reason for this is down to the new aero treatment. Among the various aero enhancements introduced by the ZR1 is a flow-through hood, with air entering via the front grille and directed through the intercooler heat exchanger before exiting out the top of the hood, thus not only cooling the charge air temperature, but also increasing front-end downforce.
The lack of a front trunk also results in reduced cargo capacity, with the C8 ZR1 offering just 9.1 cubic feet (258 liters) of cargo volume. By contrast, the C8 Stingray and C8 Z06 both offer 12.6 cubic feet (356.8 liters) of cargo volume, while the E-Ray offers 12.5 cubic feet (354 liters).
As a reminder, the C8 ZR1 is motivated by the twin-turbocharged 5.5L V8 LT7, which is rated at 1,064 horsepower and 828 pound-feet of torque. Applied to the rear wheels, it’s enough to send the ZR1 down the quarter mile in less than 10 seconds, with top speed estimated at 215 mph.
All C8 variants ride on the GM Y2 platform, and all variants are produced at the GM Bowling Green plant in Kentucky.

That’s is the $64,000 question.
Base MSRP for a Z06 coupe is about $113k. I’d guess about $50k for the ZR1 package. Then for at least a while, another $70k+ ADM. So, if I’m close, $165k for the car and $235k+ all-in for a base car. Just a guess. It will be interesting to see the real numbers.
I rarely get a chance to exercise my C7R on the street. Traffic in the DFW area has gotten horrible. Five or six seconds of full throttle, puts you into “going to jail” territory. I can only imagine what another 400 hp would be like. I’m wondering how fast you’d have to be going to use full throttle without creating a smoke show. My limited HP car will spin (not smoke) the tires at 60. I would like the opportunity to find out though.
All that is true. Take your car to a road course that you’re able to drive for just a half a day. Gliding though a corner and on exit laying into the throttle, shifting and braking for the next corner. Then repeat for several laps. Or go to Spring Mountain and take the two day class. It’s cheaper than getting a ticket or hurting yourself and others. When you feel the torque any Corvette has coming out of a corner after a few laps you’ll want more power. Fun factor , safe . My wife and I are waiting for a spot to open up out there now. We both drive out there. It never gets old.
It’s all about car control and having fun. Feb. we got our 3rd new Z06.
At 16+ cubic ft. of luggage space (by an admittedly unscientific estimate) one of my greatest joys is cross-country traveling with my wife in our C5. We each drag along only a medium-size suitcase, an overnight bag each and a few snacks. The C8’s 12.6 cubic ft. would be pretty tight, but at 9.1 cubic ft. of the C8 ZR1 would surely be grounds for an undesirable divorce.
Nobody needs 1064 HP for cross-country traveling.

Your absolutely correct “NOBODY NEEDS” but therein is the problem “NEED” and “WOULD LIKE” If you think about it nobody needs 3 meals a day but it sure is nice to have breakfast, lunch and dinner. And so it is with 1046 HP “Nobody needs it but boy it sure is nice to have for the multitude of times when your not cross-country traveling.
Why did Chevy not use a supercharger to develope all horses power in this car like they used in the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing?

They already did, the CT6-V had the Blackwing engine assembled at the Performance Build Center within the Bowling Green Plant. It had twin turbos and produced 550 hp & 640 lb. ft. of torque. The turbos were sequential and we mounted in the V of the engine which is then called a hot V. They needed that configuration with the engine in the front. The ZR1 is able to utilize much bigger turbos with a mid engine setup which doesn’t have shock towers constraining available room. Also a Supercharger as you asked will not produce as much power as those 76mm turbos. The big supercharger on the C7 ZR1 needed 105 hp to drive it at wide open throttle, turbo chargers are more efficient for developing big power.
I not going to buy a ZR1 looking for trunk space. Going buy it for sports. Going road trip mainly in the summer this sport car. If people can do it in motorcycle for road trip, I sure can be done in this ZR1.Tee shirt and shorts and tennis shoes. If you can afford ZR1. You can Buy ur stuff on the road and send back home in the mail.
We usually do at least one long vacation a year in the Corvette. Our C7 coupe allows us enough room to travel for two weeks without taking time out to do laundry. It looks like the ZR1 would cut that to about a week. That’s the price you pay for the HP. Another solution would be to mail clean clothing to a hotel where you’re staying before you leave and mail the dirty stuff home when you get there. You could do that for as many locations as you needed to.
Any one buying a Z06 or ZR 1 should have to go to Ron Fellows driving school before taking delivery.
Can’t get in ! Took delivery of our Z06 in February and call in early June to get on a list. Last week in august or first week in September was good. We are on a waiting list and haven’t heard anything. We both want to drive . This will be our 4th time to take the class. It’s has been a little different each time we have been out there. Wait and see. At least they could tell us you’re on the list and will December- January- or some time frame .
