General Motors just pulled the sheets on the next-generation 2025 GMC Terrain, showing off a new design, additional safety items, and the latest tech features. The powertrain remains unchanged from the previous model year. The new 2025 Terrain is set to launch later this year, with higher trims expected in 2025.
The redesigned exterior of the 2025 GMC Terrain lends the crossover a more rugged, truck-like appearance, aligning it closely with the rest of the GMC lineup. Key exterior features include distinctive C-shaped lighting signatures in the headlamps, a bold grille design reminiscent of GMC’s larger trucks, and standard 17-inch wheels. For those opting for the Denali trim, 20-inch wheels are available as an upgrade. Additionally, the 2025 Terrain introduces a two-tone roof option in either black or grey, a first for the model that allows for greater customization and a more personalized look.
Inside, the 2025 Terrain boasts a 15-inch diagonal Premium GMC Infotainment System as standard, which is complemented by an 11-inch-diagonal driver information center. These screens provide access to advanced technology, including Google Assistant, Google Maps, and a suite of over 15 safety and driver assistance features. Notable safety features include Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking, and Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking, among others. The Terrain also offers up to eight available camera views, available 5G Wi-Fi, Rainsense wipers, and Heated wiper park for added convenience and safety.
Under the hood, the 2025 GMC Terrain once again cradles the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine as standard, producing 175 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. Slight improvements in fuel economy are anticipated compared to the 2024 model, as GM Authority covered previously. At launch, the Elevation trim will be equipped as standard with all-wheel drive and GM’s eight-speed automatic transmission.
The next-generation 2025 GMC Terrain will be late in the 2024 calendar year, with the Elevation trim level the first out the door. The more rugged AT4 and luxurious Denali trims will follow in 2025, arriving for the 2026-model-year lineup.

Huge improvement over the last generation, except 1) the lower hood/grill design is strange, and 2) the engine is too weak.
Will the front wheel drive have a CVT?
If that’s what the Equinox has, this will too.
Sadly yes, so not much product differentiation between it and the Equinox.
Much less differentiation this time except for the dash.
I’m surprised GM has a second transmission in this car. The CVT must be a purely CAFE play since it adds cost to have a second transmission. I hope GM’s CVT doesn’t have any issues, anyone know how the Malibu CVT has held up? GM must really need the incremental improvement in the CAFE numbers these CVT’s give to add the cost and put up with the lower satisfaction scores CVT’s always cause.
Me too. I’ve not heard much about GMs CVTs. There’s also one in the Trailblazer/Encore GX FWDs.
Its the same Junky Jatco CVT found in Nissans.
GM yet again settles for pure mediocrity.
Know what you’re talking about before you hit post. I don’t know if it’s good or bad but It’s an in house GM design not a Jatco unit.
It’s a decent unit, better than Nissans, par with Subaru. This is a cost cutting move. It’s a sufficient transaxle, less efficient and sluggish compared to the 9T45, but decently reliable, costs half of a 9T45. I wouldn’t balk at it, as Polaris rangers use this type of transmission for heavy off road abuse. The Nissan first Gen CVT was the only transmission worse than a Chrysler AT and a close second was the Saturn CVT.
If this info is accurate, it’s sort of hard to get excited about this soft, rolling launch. AT4 and Denali trims not available until 2025 as 2026 model years? That says to me that those trims aren’t available until mid 2025. Will the Elevation become a a 2026 model year at the time the Denali and AT4 trims are introduced? Makes me think that GM isn’t all that excited about the launch itself.
It is strange.. it seems like a modern tradition to get the most expensive, “First Edition” trims out first to draw attention (and profit). Maybe they just got too focused on the Equinox (and all the EVs) that the Terrain fell behind in development and testing.
That vertical tablet would send me straight to the Equinox. It’s an improvement in exterior looks. But, that gouging mentality still exists, as seen in mandatory AWD at launch.
I agree with this. However, I believe it will be short lived. I don’t think the market will be okay with this. We are buying a 2025 Suburban because the 2025 GMC Yukon XL will now have the vertical infotainment.
The Terrain will get a larger infotainment screen than the Equinox (15.0 vs 11.3-Inch Diagonal) so on paper it’s a bit better. Equinox also has the screen biased toward the driver while the Terrain has a more traditional neutral position, better for the passenger. The A/C buttons, vents. etc. also differ. This area comes down to personal preference, so you should sit in both to see how it feels.
Screen size will differ for the Suburban and Yukon.
New redesign: Check
Updated technology: Check
Horizontal cupholder: Check (I love that)
Center air vents not at knee level: Check (I’m looking at you Blazer)
There’s a lot to like here. So far so good.
This suppose to compete with the escape that still comes with 2.0l . I see no reason to go less powered cross over .
Wait until you see the decontenting that Ford is subjecting the ’25 Escape to. It’s being laughed at but yes, it still offers the 2.0L upgrade. At least these 2 don’t have a 3-banger standard.
The Escape isn’t long for this world, apparently. It’s more in competition with the Bronco Sport. That said, the Bronco Sport also has a 2.0T available.
Bronco Sport is in a size class below, between compact and subcompact. Think of it a s a competitor to the Trailblazer.
Ford would really be losing it to just drop the Escape. It’s the largest market segment. If they do, investors will drop Ford like hot potatoes.
Yes, the Bronco Sport is shorter, but it’s on the same platform as the Escape, same engines, and is actually heavier and taller. The Escape rumors may have come from plans to replace it with an EV, but, seeing how Ford has been pushing back any new EV plans in the US, who knows.
Profile is now almost identical to the Equinox. The two have never shared so much sheet metal before.
Yeah, they’re really close, right down to the “floating” C-pillar (slightly different shapes) and two-tone roof. Guess they both wanted the “rugged” truck-like look. Still not as bad as the 80s/90s rebadging. The front is entirely different, at least.
Interior looks like a Doge RAM
No SLT/LTZ high Trim Level content. Same as the Equinox. GM is leaving their LTZ/SLT customers behind.
“Elevation” could be better than the current gen “SLT” when you account for all new standard features. It is hard to say without seeing the full feature list. What could be missing from the current SLT? leather seats? – I wouldn’t care. Roof rails? – now I would be concerned.
Of course they will offer an overpriced upgrade package for each trim level. So in the worst case scenario, you should have that package option to add in missing features. Packages tend to be weak value for money, but that’s how it always is with them.
Have to wait an entire extra year to get a better trim level (AT4 and Denali)? This makes no sense. We can only hope this is because they are working on a better powertrain combo (better engine and/or hybrid) with some more guts to it.
Bet it’s just a slow rollout for quality reasons. Sorry, disagree.
Dummies are downvoting you, but you are very probably right. GM already said a new hybrid offering for North America will come in 2027 – 3 years away! We have seen the 2025 Equinox specs and there is no hybrid or alternate engine. The Terrain’s engine, tranny, windows, doors, roof, basically most of the car, will be the same as the the Equinox, as usual.
Currently own a 2022 Terrain Denali AWD, love it except that it could a little more power on the highway and climbing steep hills in higher altitudes, around town it is fairly nimble and performs decently, but there should be another engine option available, maybe a 2.0 Liter 4 cylinder Turbo, with perhaps 250 HP at least in the AWD models, the 9 speed auto tranny is okay, works well with the 1.5 Liter Turbo 4 cylinder and the mileage on the road is very good, around town in bumper to bumper trafic, meh, not so good, but that is to be expected I guess. Overall, will probably go for another GMC or if the wife wants, could slip over to a Buick SUV, we’ll have to wait and see but I know they might be offering a more powerful drivetrain on some models. The GMC Acadia could be an option, but…the size and cost above the Terrain isn’t necessary for us, so maybe we’ll just stick with the Terrain Denali as the interior and exterior are usually a cut about the SLE and SLT which we’ve owned also before the Denali, nice also but for a few bucks more the Denali is one classy ride indeed.
The Buick Envision (if you can stomach the China bit) is the competitor to this and does offer the 2.0L as standard. I see 10 of those for every Terrain. Blue hairs love them and I live in an area heavily populated by those. Bigger discounts on the Buick too.
Catfish Face .
Another all show and no go complete redesign all looks and tech with a old wornout unpowered no option drivetrain.
GM should offer the CSS 50T LSY 2.0L turbo as optional. Big miss.
Looks nice in black. Too bad it’s way underpowered.
It is on par with the competition and their standard drivetrains, actually better than some with their older NA set ups. It is on the lower side on HP but high side on torque, so that puts it smack dab in the middle. Unlike most the others currently there isn’t a hybrid option that many have or a high power bigger turbo motor that only a few have. The larger turbo motors don’t sell well, hybrids do though and GM is bringing one soon to the market as the optional premium motor. They just didn’t want to wait a few more years with an older player. So just like the HD pick ups, redesign the truck, then a few more years later the motors. Either way, far from under powered, it is like a mid 8 second zero to sixty, plenty to keep up with traffic. Now if it was above ten seconds or worse, then I could see your reasoning. An 80’s Mustang GT was slower than this thing, so under powered it is not…
Thanks for the comment. Great insight and analysis. Personally I never thought the 1.5L engine was underpowered. I want to see better efficiency with a hybrid instead of more gas consumption so I can be first to the next red light.
Do you expect he hybrid option to come with essentially the same body and tech features?
GM seems to do a facelift / small refresh after 3-4 years for the cars & crossovers. Should that coincide with the hybrid motor introduction?
I don’t think anybody is saying this engine is not a decent base engine. The problem is there is not an option with more power, whether that be a hybrid or the 2.0.
In our household we require our cars to be able to pass others on highway mountain passes up 7% grades at several thousand feet elevation with no drama. Our 2018 Terrain Denali can do this as can our Audi Q3 (with optional engine!).
As much as I like the new packaging the wallet will be closed until GM can deliver a more compelling powertrain. That’s the bottom line.
Wesley, probably half of the commenters here are literally saying the base engine is too weak. It is fine for a vast majority of the customer base who are driving around town or non-mountain highways. As TMI said, the current engine basically average for this vehicle class.
For people in your situation, frequently driving in the mountains, a hybrid should be able to satisfy the extra power request and have better fuel economy. This is what we see with the RAV4 hybrid and RAV4 Prime compared to the gas-only base model. GM will introduce a hybrid as the premium engine option in about 2 years. It’s a while to wait, but at least it is finally coming.
Second best looking Terrain ever. I still think the first generation (2010-2015) was the best looking Terrain. Looks more trucky instead of crossover like.
FINALLY, the PUSH BUTTON SHIFTER IS GONE!!!! THANK YOU.
Nobody seems to care but it has PADDLE SHIFTERS ! Hooray for the guys who know how to use them!
Was really hoping this would be the one that gets me back into GMs portfolio. The exterior is exactly what I want but that interior, particular the touch screen and the vents above it… rough. And sorry. The one I want will top out well into $40k territory, I’m not spending that much for a mediocre 1.5T.
I can’t understand why GM is only producing under-powered small crossovers these days. Although I know that I may have a different opinion than many, but I refuse to buy any vehicle that takes more than 7 seconds to get to 60 mph. Every small Buick and now Chevy and GMC don’t meet my criteria. These things can barely get out of their own way. No thanks!
GM sells 1.3 million trucks, SUV’s, and vans every year. In order to meet “CAFE” government laws they must sell a boat load of underpowered slow vehicles to meet those govt. mandates. Deal with it.
