GM Working On Upcoming Chevy Compact Crossover In Brazil

As part of the new investment cycle for Brazil officially announced at the beginning of the year, General Motors is working on an upcoming Chevy compact crossover in the South American country.

Several sources familiar with the GM Brazilian subsidiary’s product plans indicate that the automaker is working on an upcoming Chevy compact crossover, developed by the local engineering team as a first-time model that will expand the brand’s portfolio of vehicles manufactured in Brazil. In fact, the compact crossover is part of the first phase of the investment cycle that GM Brazil will execute between 2024 and 2028.

In addition to the upcoming Chevy Onix crossover, this new Chevy compact crossover is the second all-new product the company plans to begin manufacturing in Brazil in the second half of the decade. The R$7 billion (about $1.4 billion) ongoing investment includes development work on the new utility vehicle, whose production will take place during a second phase of the investment cycle to be announced soon.

“First, R$7 billion was announced for the first phase of this investment cycle, which we will start now in 2024, then in 2025, and will continue until 2028,” said Vice President of GM South America, Fabio Rua. “So we expect to make an additional announcement to this R$7 billion, to reformulate our entire technology park and all of our products,” he added.

In particular, Auto Esporte has just revealed new details about the second phase of the investment cycle, which GM will announce during the 2025 calendar year, along with the upcoming Chevy compact crossover. The Brazilian magazine claims that Chevrolet’s new model will be the brand’s first hybrid manufactured in the country, that it will be based on the GM GEM platform and that it will be manufactured at the GM São Caetano Do Sul plant – alongside the Chevy Tracker and Chevy Montana that use the same architecture.

The upcoming Chevy compact crossover is currently under development in Brazil and is expected to hit the Brazilian market in about three years, with mass production to begin in late 2027. The model will expand the domestic brand’s crossover lineup, positioning itself above the current subcompact Chevy Tracker with a larger body and more muscular powertrain that could incorporate 48V mild-hybrid technology.
