Looking Ahead

Sales of both the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon posted very healthy gains during the second quarter of 2024, enabling the Colorado to move into second place among competitors while the Canyon more than doubled deliveries year-over-year thanks to both finally working through a generational changeover.

Besides introducing much-improved, next-generation midsize trucks for the 2023 model year, the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison and GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition each debuted for 2024, offering ultimate, extreme off-road variants for their respective brands – both developed in partnership with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). The Bison carries on from the previous generation Colorado ZR2, while the AEV Edition is an all-new, next-level option for the AT4X trim that debuted with the next-gen Canyon.

It’s worth noting that while the Bison and AEV Edition share the same suspension configuration, enabling both trucks to stand tall with an identical 12.2 inches of ground clearance, there is one small difference.

GM has upped its game in the midsize truck space to better compete against the perennially best-selling Toyota Tacoma. Solid sales performance this quarter seems to indicate that the automaker’s approach is starting to pay off.

About Chevrolet Colorado

A year ago, GM unveiled the all-new 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, adding even more off-road features to the already trail-capable 2023 Colorado ZR2. In addition to a wealth of standard components from AEV, the 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison also incorporates development input from off-road racing champion Chad Hall and was refined on the Rubicon Trail to boot, adding new features like front and rear jounce control dampers.

Five trim levels, including Work Truck (WT), LT, Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2, along with the ZR2 Bison package, are offered for 2024. The fastest-turning trim for the third-generation Colorado is the range-topping ZR2.

The 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, incidentally, gets a standard bed-mounted spare, a new launch control feature, and a new Recovery Package. Its arrival means the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss Special Edition package hasn’t returned for the 2024 model year, indirectly replaced by the Bison.

Furthermore, among the many changes and updates for the new model year, the 2024 Chevy Colorado drops the 8-inch driver information center, replaced by the 11-inch DIC across the lineup, and drops the mid-level Turbo Plus engine, adopting the GM’s new TurboMax engine branding as part of changes and updates for the 2024 model year. That means the 2024 Colorado will offer just the base L2R engine on WT and LT trim levels and the High Output L3B TurboMax engine on all other trims while optional on the WT and LT. On a related note, here are the towing capacities and payload capacities of the 2024 Colorado.

The 2024 Colorado also offers a new Sports Bar Package and new Off-Road Lighting Package, while Trail Boss and ZR2 trim levels now have the option of a new off-road front bumper package for enhanced off-road capability.

Check out everything new and different for the 2024 Chevy Colorado.

About GMC Canyon

The first-ever 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition debuted this past summer, offering a next-level off-roader complete with tons of trail-ready upgrades over the standard 2023 Canyon AT4X, framed as “the most advanced and capable Canyon ever.” Furthermore, the 2024 Canyon AT4X and AT4X AEV Edition will both get a new launch control feature as part of their Baja Mode, improving performance both on-road and off-road.

For 2024, four trim levels are offered, including Elevation, AT4, Denali, and AT4X, along with the AT4X AEV Edition package.

Additionally, the 2024 Canyon gets GM’s TurboMax engine branding as the name, from now on, of the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine in the High-Output tune. That is the sole powertrain offered on all 2023 and 2024 Canyon trims. On a related note, here are the towing capacities and payload capacities of the 2024 Canyon.

The 2024 Canyon offers a new Sports Bar Package, while the AT4 and AT4X trim levels get the option of a new off-road front bumper package for enhanced off-road capability.

GM also revealed that all trim levels of the 2024 Canyon will integrate Ultifi, the automaker’s new end-to-end vehicle software platform. Some potential uses of Ultifi include interfacing with the owner’s smart home, which could include functions such as switching on security systems when the owner leaves and turning them off when they return, changing the home temperature, and much more.

Check out all the changes and updates to the 2024 GMC Canyon.

Although I could care less about it, I’m surprised the over-rated Tacoma sales have taken a dive off a cliff. What, are people finally seeing them for what they really are? Kind of shocked at it however. I also don’t understand why the Ranger just doesn’t seem to get any love. I really like them and if I had a need for a truck, it would be on the short list. But maybe others are doing what I’d do and probably get the Maverick hybrid for less money and way better MPG.

My local dealer finally got his first non pre sold Colorado’s in last week. Has yet to get a non pre sold Canyon in. The Wentzville plant is finally getting up to speed on these (at the cost of less Express/Savana output) so maybe we’ll see even better numbers 3rd quarter.
The Toyota dealers around here are awash in Tacomas and Tundras, offering $2500-3k rebates along with other perks. Usually the other way around….

The Toyota store down the street from my house is absolutely loaded with trucks. You can’t see a Corolla, Camry or Corolla Cross or Highlander. But if you want a truck, they have them.

I think the issues and (lack of) quality is catching up to them. Even hard core Toyota truck people can take so much and then they turn. I hope they defect to GM and Ford or Ram with the full sized.

Late roll out and several quality issues with 2024 Tacoma’s have really slowed their sales. Coupled with Colorado, Canyon and Frontier are all better then Tacoma in value dollar for dollar and capability.

Hehe, good news! Despite having teething issues at launch the Colorado and Canyon are finally reaching their stride. The new Tacoma isn’t all that its cracked up to be, as Toyota wrangles with brand new powertrains with fresh designs. Toyota has this manufacturing fundamental which is continuous improvements and development of older power trains and platforms that results in higher durability and reliability that in turn creates positive long term reputation among consumers in the automobile market. GM on their part is slowly relearning this, as its something they actually used to do with their vehicles from the 1930’s to 1960’s. The present 2.7L turbo and 8 speed auto powertrain have been significantly improved and strengthened comparted to when they were introduced for long term reliability.

The Canyon and Colorado will will never outsell the Tacoma , and it has nothing to do with how good the GM twins are or are not. It has everything to do with GM’s strategy and their capacity to build the mid size trucks. The twins are built at 1 plant only with a capacity of approximately 150,000 units combined. That volume satisfies , Canada , USA, Mexico etc and the total is for both Chev and GMC. By contrast Toyota has the capacity to build 250,000 or more Tacomas.. Also GM makes huge profits on Full Size and if there were enough mid-sizers to meet demand, it would eat some into the sales of the Silverado/ Sierra.
Go to a GM dealer as we are heading to completion of the second model year in the market since the launch of the current generation of the twins and most have virtually no mid size inventory . The lots are loaded with full size
The new Colorado is a great truck . I had a 2016 V6 , Z71 crew cab, ( which we kept) and took delivery of 2024, Z71 Colorado in May, and I can say after 4 months , I absolutely love this truck, and so do my friends, most who have FS pickups.
GM could easily outsell Tacoma , but they don’t have the capacity to build them, plain and simple.
