Dodge Charger EV Teases ‘Exhaust’ Note, Muscle Car Fans React: Video

The industry-wide EV transition isn’t without its controversies, and indeed, perhaps the most outspoken critics are the muscle car enthusiasts. Which makes a lot of sense, really. Now, Dodge is catching some flak after posting a video of the new Dodge Charger Daytona EV making some very fake internal combustion noises.
The short video was recently posted to social media with a description that reads “Hear that?”
The video begins with some V8 noises and a view of a tunnel. As the video gets underway, the V8 noises increase in volume and tone, as if a high-powered muscle car was laying into the throttle. We next see the Dodge Charger Daytona accelerating towards the camera, with the V8 noises becoming increasingly louder as the car approaches, changing in tone as the car blows by the camera.
Of course, the tunnel exhaust check is near and dear to the hearts of enthusiasts, and it’s clear what Dodge is aiming for with this video. The backlash, however, was swift.
“Ya’ll put speakers on this microwave to make it sound like it has an engine,” one commenter writes.
“I’d rather have no car than one of these,” writes another.
“Hear what?” writes yet another.
For those who may have missed it, Stellantis unveiled the all-electric Dodge Charger Daytona EV earlier this year, showing off a battery-powered muscle car producing 670 horsepower. Output is put to the pavement through all-wheel-drive grip, with the run to 60 mph taking just 3.3 seconds. Impressive specs, no doubt about it, but at the end of the day, it’s a hard sell to get muscle car fans to let go of their V8.

Dodge is trying, though. The Dodge Charger Daytona is equipped with something called a “Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust,” which runs sound through an amplifier and tuning chamber at volumes up to 126 dB. Nevertheless, enthusiasts seem to agree that fake exhaust noise is no substitute for a real V8 engine.
Unfortunately, GM has discontinued the Chevy Camaro, with the latest news indicating that the nameplate will likely get electrified. Hopefully The General is taking notes on what’s working when it comes to these EV muscle cars – and what isn’t working.

lol that fake sound through the speakers BMW put in their puny i4s etc to simulate engine sound… like 10 years ago..
dodge is really doing all the things that people dont like. who is even in charge of that department at this point
These cars are DOA
Serious question here why can’t they just make a straight 8 version of the sewing machine I think that would be really cool and creative because the direction they’re headed right now is not good
They should have just updated the V8. Instead of trying to force a one size fits all solution onto the world, they should be creating options. Get moving on the synthetic fuels while also making EVs.
A straight eight, would be too long for decent weight balance, unless you want further front nose heavy imbalance.
Not to mention the intricacies of keeping a very long crankshaft from rotating itself into a pretzel.
800lbs….
That was how much the last strait 8 weighted in only a 5.3L displacement. Lot of weight for 165 HP. We’re talking right under the 6.7 Cummins in weight.
Dodge f’d up. Makes this sound like try hard.
Isn’t that the version with the 3.0L?
There is nothing more disgusting as a marketing ploy than car manufacturers pumping sound insde the cabin .. Worse is what Dodge is doing with fake electric/exhaust sound bull$hit!
Don’t blame Dodge – blame Big Brother for pushing EVs and tightening EPA guidelines. Add to that Dodge’s parent company Stellantis (a sour subject for another conversation) prohibiting Dodge from buying carbon credits. But for the above, the beloved V-8s would still be in production. PS-I’m not a fan if imitation exhaust notes either.
Why blame Big Brother? The gummint didn’t start climate change, we the people did. Once we the people figured out what we the people were doing to the atmosphere, it was incumbent on the gummint, acting for we the people, to take action to mitigate the effects of releasing copious amounts of carbon into said atmosphere. It might be inconvenient (yep, I said it) to those of us who like cars and motorcycles, but them’s the facts. Big Brother isn’t doing anything except trying to clean up the mess we the people made.
I remember putting playing cards clamped on with clothes pins into the spokes of the wheels on my bicycle ! Ya it was cool but putting fake exhaust notes on an EV sports car made for adults not so cool !
Why would anyone want more torque and power ? Good old slower gasoline for everyone.
Someday, young folk will be screaming at the track in modified high torques unbelievably fast electric powered
cars and will learn how to hack them and do amazing things. Just like the World War 2 vets did with old cars.
Let the young own the future. Let us old folks hang on to a past, a slower time.
We will wait for you at the finish line and in the winners circle.
You want EV, for everyone else. If you make sure EV stays relevant, then everyone commuting and doing useless stuff can use an EV, and there is more gasoline for YOU. For the Truck, Motorcycle, Sports Car. That is what I am doing. I want my gas,
for that to happen, everyone else needs to switch to an EV, especially city commuting folk, grocery getters,
I drove an electric vehicle with piped in engine sounds, here is why it actually helped…
The sound changed with the acceleration and speed, which helped my ears and my brain cue my foot
for acceleration and braking. Pure electric is so silent, you have no way to relate or gauge speed to sound.
So, after driving it on a track for several laps, I realized how it helped me.
Interesting.
Regarding the Camaro, personally I’d prefer that they keep it dead this time rather than putting the legendary name on a soulless dud.
Why are wasting their time discontinue the line, electric cars are selling like broken glass as it is. The dealer network will stay away from these just like they are keeping very low inventory’s on electric cars and trucks now
Look Stellantis is a company that was not well to start that bought even more financially strapped FCA.
The cold hard truth is that even with the sale of all these cool high profile high powered cars they were still losing money.
They failed to also bring in the small CUV models that are selling like crazy today and where the profits are. Jeep had some rehased Fiat based models and Dodge did the forgettable Hornet. That was where the money was.
Ram got spun off and Jeep is struggling with quality and sales staggering. Stellantis also laid off many engineers at Auburn hills. This is where all the quality issues are coming from.
To be honest I expect Chrysler to be closed or the name sold. Dodge is on life support. What cars they have coming will decide if they live or die. Stellantis has clearly said what ever is not making money will be closed or sold.
The cold hard reality is EV models are here to stay. The only thing is when will they be as good or better than the ICE.
The real argument now is does the government force inferior over priced cars on the public or do they continue to let the market improve and let the customers decide what is right for them.
This next election is based on this as one side will force the EV models on you no matter if you can afford them or live normally with them or not. While the other side has taken a let the market decide and let the models improve to earn the sales as a free economy should do.
Look the world is not going to end if we keep ICE 10-100 more years., I feel with more time and investment the EV models can earn their place and it is only right for the public to decide what is right for them.
Also stop all these government incentives on EV. Smearing Hamburger on your kid to get the dog to play with him is not how you train a dog.
Dodge here is putting lipstick on a pig. The Dodge engineers are not happy they took the Hemi away and never let them develop it more. Look at GM and what they just did with the Corvette. I expect this new Gemini to end up in the truck in a more rugged less power and higher mile version.
GM has been lucky to have been able to play both sides. They have been able to create and sell a ton of small CUV and pick ups that pay the bills and development yet also they can continue EV work so they are ready to face what ever political action is forced on them.
Just look at the fact GM has plants that can build a ICE model and a EV model at the same time. That is really a big deal as you have the flexibility to move to what is needed when ever.
GM is doing well in a very difficult time for all automakers.
GM, VW and Toyota are the only ones doing well and even Toyota is having massive quality issues now. 100K engines to be replace in trucks and Lexus are only part of the problems.
Ford is hurting money wise and model wise.
As for Stellantis it will get uglier as time goes on. More brands will die like Vauxhall. and others. Even Opel is on the bubble.
The EV market is still small but it is growing more every year. Some regions like California they are all over and like a virus it will continue to grow as a slow rate as they get better. I just feel they need to earn the right to be purchased not forced on us.
Most people are so clueless, they won’t even notice the difference…
Flowmaster has done it far (did I say far, yea it’s that far) better job with their EV exhaust than this. It may not a real V8 with all of the sights and smells but it’s sound is closeish.
I’d think the hot rod and muscle car community would love the performance an EV provides?
I get it, the sound has to be “nice” as well, but there’s something to be said about running silent.
I’ve had 2 Corvettes but the performance of a Tesla or modest EV blows them out of the water, plus there’s no
continual tinkering to get the vehicle to run right!
The performance community likes the performance but we also like the noise, feel and smell if an engine making power with force.
If you have ever been to a NHRA event and stood next to a top fuel car you find it is an experience just to be close and not even in the car.
Ford and GM ran electric cars on Exhibition runs but no one cared.
Electric cars are like fireworks with no sound.
Not to mention that EV weight kills handling. Tires just can’t take the strain.
No V8 No Soul
Can’t say this v-8 sound is “real and it’s spectacular”. LOL Seinfeld was a great tv series.
Not to be mean – but seriously – where are they going to be able to plug these in in the hood? They either did this on purpose to shed themselves of that element or they have no idea who their customer is.
Starts at $59,595 for the base R/T and $73,190 for the Scat Pack
Going to be a tough sell.
The new “Scat” Pack is really shaping-up to be more like the “Noun” definition of the word instead of the historical “Intransitive Verb” version…
Do you mean to say that the Charger EV is a real “stinker?”
