The GM Authority Take
Chevy Camaro sales continued a downward trend, with sales volume diving as the Bow Tie brand’s discontinued muscle car moved any remaining inventory. As of early July, there were about 500 new Camaro units at U.S. dealers.
The last Chevy Camaro was built due to faltering sales and too many things going wrong with the sixth-generation Camaro. Going forward, GM had committed to a somewhat aggressive strategy to go fully electric by 2035, though the CEO Mary Barra now admits that the EV transition will take decades.
Production also ended for one of its chief rivals, the Dodge Challenger, which will be indirectly replaced by the first-ever 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona, for which GM has no rival and can’t build one. Recently, the Dodge Charger EV teased an “exhaust” note, with muscle car fans reacting less than favorably. There’s just no replacing the visceral sound and feel of a V8 engine under the hood.
Meanwhile, the seventh-generation, redesigned 2024 Ford Mustang carries on, even throwing shade at the discontinued Camaro, albeit by strangely comparing Chevy’s street car to the Mustang GT3 race car. Notably, Ford CEO Jim Farley says, “We will never make an all-electric Mustang,” adding that a V8 will be offered for as long as possible. Of course, The Blue Oval does sell an EV with the Mustang nameplate via the Mustang Mach-E crossover.
About Chevrolet Camaro
The 2024 Chevy Camaro arrives as the sixth generation’s ninth and final model year, featuring a pair of special-edition variants. These include the 2024 Chevy Camaro ZL1 Garage 56 Edition, as well as the 2024 Chevy Camaro Collector Edition, both of which offer their own unique content and varying levels of exclusivity to pay homage to the first-gen Camaro’s internal program code of “Panther.” The Collector Edition was offered on all trim levels, but only the ZL1 could be ordered with Panther Black Matte paint, the first matte paint option ever offered on the Camaro.
Additionally, the 2024 Chevy Camaro ZL1 Collector Edition includes a Shinola Canfield Sport 45mm watch, which is now being shipped to owners.
A boatload of other changes and updates for the 2024 Camaro included dropping two paint colors, the Shock and Steel Edition package, the lowered suspension package and the sway bar package, the 20-inch Caliente wheels, the base 1LS trim level, and the turbo 2.0L LTG engine. Additionally, the 2024 Camaro SS 1LE Suspension Handling Package became unavailable, while the full SS 1LE Track Performance Package remained available to order.
Final units of the Camaro Convertible were produced this past November 22nd, and the last Camaro Coupe was built on December 14th, bringing production of the muscle car’s sixth generation to an end without an ICE successor in the works. Fittingly, the final 2024 Chevy Camaro was a ZL1 with a clutch. The 2024 model year marks the end of the Bow Tie brand’s muscle car for now.
GM built a total of 1,335 units of the 2024 Chevy Camaro Collector Edition.
“Camaro is a passion product,” a Chevy spokesperson said of the end of the Camaro, noting that “it has developed a fan base across the world and has brought people into Chevrolet dealerships for generations.” In summary, “the sixth generation specifically represented athleticism and composure – exuding confidence on the road and dominance on the track.”
Fans of the performance nameplate are finding that every Chevy Camaro Collector Edition has this cool Easter egg.
For its part, Hendrick Motorsports debuted a 40th Anniversary Edition of the Chevy Camaro, which will be sold exclusively through select Hendrick Automotive Group Chevrolet dealerships to add yet another special variant as the iconic muscle car sunsets.
Looking forward, GM has confirmed a next-generation Chevy Camaro to keep the nameplate alive. Global Chevrolet Vice President Scott Bell stated, “While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro’s story.” Since then, Bell has added, “Never say never” about Camaro’s return.
An additional clue about the nameplate’s future comes from GM President Mark Reuss, who sees the next-gen Chevy Camaro as an EV pony car.
In fact, at GM Authority, we suspect that the Camaro name may not be applied to a single model but to a broader EV sub-brand. Some of the models would likely resemble the familiar Camaro with coupe and convertible variants, while others might be sporty two-door and four-door crossover SUVs, with a mid-priced sports car as the brand flagship.

It needed a full redesign in 2016 interior and exterior, not just a refresh. The poor outward vision is the direct contributor to heavy decline in sales to a distant 3rd place behind the Challenger. Otherwise it’s handling was tops compared to the competition and power options superior as well. They wanted to invest their resources in Ultium, oh well.
Yup, MaryJoe killed it.
Maybe if they accepted my new car order, sales wouldn’t be down!! Ridiculous!!
And you didn’t accept my order why????
So don’t fill all the orders than….
Why wouldn’t sales have dropped. Production stopped in December. Lower inventory to choose from.
Right. Who knew? LOL!
WTF ????? This is what happens when things are discontinued …
Is anyone surprised ??? No real news here !!!!
Let’s please Discontinue Mary Barra before she kills the rest of the company !!!!!
I was one of the hold outs on buying a Camaro. I found a 2010 5th Gen SS at a great price and I will say that I don’t get the complaints about visibility. It is definitely not for everyone but I enjoy driving it. It’s the closest to my ’67 Chevelle SS396 I’ve come to in smiles per mile!
Where is my car??? Let’s not place my order…duh!!
Well… if you make a statement that you are no longer making a car, people will stop purchasing. So big surprise that the demand went down. GM needs to get in the real world and manufactuere gas engine cars that have a preformance package. They now have a vette and a zero, and if we dont wach it the vette will go electric.. Bring the camera back with various preformace packges as well as look at the Chevelle go after the others. But make the chevelle look like the 68 to 72 body … the one that most all are looking for. GM needs to get back in the game
Again? I still would like to know how many sold orders where buyers ordered the car through their dealer were never picked up by GM……..I ordered my 2024 in August of 2023…….the dealer got a bunch of V6’s that were not sold orders……This is the second Chevrolet vehicle that I spec’d out, put a deposit down and it was never built………looks like they were just using up what they had in inventory……EV is dead……the entire management team needs to go.
Why does GM keep trying to blame the customer for the loss of 2 great cars. The Camaro for fun and the Cruse for comuting. Why won’t Mary build the amount of Z 06 ‘s that are needed. What’s going to happen with the ZR 1 ? Sheiks and Drug lords will be first.
