GM’s mass-market brand Buick ranked about average for customer satisfaction in its sector according to the results of the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, now in its 29th year providing feedback on annual brand performance.
J.D. Power says that with an average mass market satisfaction rating of 838 out of a possible 1,000 points, Buick scored 842, coming in seventh after MINI, Ram, Kia, Hyundai, GMC, and Volkswagen.
Buick also marginally improved its satisfaction among customers compared to the 2023 APEAL results, when it achieved a rating of 841 points. The Tri-Shield brand also bettered its ranking compared to last year, when it placed ninth as opposed to this year’s seventh, though it was above the mass market auto sector average then, too.
While none of its 2024 model year vehicles placed at the top in individual vehicle segments, one model, the 2024 Buick Envista, reached the top three in the “Small SUV” category. This is a notable achievement for a new model unveiled by GM last April, with the Buick Envista offering a small crossover coupe with premium features but the affordability for mass appeal.
The Envista and other Buick vehicles may also be riding a rising wave of positive consumer sentiment. Car popularity, in general, increased for the 2024 model year after two years of decline. J.D. Power senior director Frank Hanley says that automakers are “launching enhanced vehicles that are more in line with what customers want.”
He cited “improved interior storage and higher quality materials” and “ensuring features have ease of use” as major positives. However, infotainment systems are still a weak point in customer satisfaction. About 25 percent of owners are dissatisfied with audio quality, and ever-more-complex infotainment systems are creating a slew of complaints and significant customer frustration.
The APEAL study develops its customer satisfaction score by surveying owners’ opinions about 37 different aspects of their vehicle. The answers came from a pool of 99,144 new 2024 vehicle owners who have owned the vehicle for a minimum of 90 days.

Red, white and blue emblem still out of place with only one model made in the US, one in China, and two in South Korea. Sad, but many customers don’t know or care, especially regarding the 100% Chinese Envision.
Why sad? Customers want the best built vehicles.
