Acura is cooking up a new all-electric sports car, and it’s taking inspiration from the mid-engine NSX. The upcoming performance EV will ride on Honda’s 0 Series electric architecture, and is expected to debut around the 2027 or 2028 timeframe. Meanwhile, GM has no clear rival.
The new “NSX-type” EV was confirmed by Acura global executive president Shinji Aoyama at a recent roundtable discussion held during Monterey Car Week.
“We may not call it an NSX, but it’s kind of an NSX-type of vehicle,” Aoyama said. According to the VP, the Japanese automaker is taking a “thin and light” development approach with the Honda 0 Series platform set to underpin the new NSX-type EV. The 0 Series architecture will also underpin a new all-electric sedan expected to launch in 2026.
“So this means, basically, how to make the platform thinner than other existing vehicles,” Aoyama said in regard to the 0 Series platform. “So even [with battery dimensions], we are trying to make a thinner vehicle. So that we can realize a lower-height vehicle. This means that we can realize a larger [cabin], as well.”
The second-generation Acura NSX was discontinued in 2022, and was motivated by a hybrid powertrain consisting of a twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6 and three electric motors, with the range-topping NSX Type S rated at 600 horsepower and 492 pound-feet of torque, all of which hits the ground through all-wheel drive. The sprint to 60 mph takes roughly three seconds flat, with top speed rated at 191 mph.
Meanwhile, GM has no direct rival to the upcoming NSX-type EV, at least not yet. The Honda 0 Series platform is roughly equivalent to the GM BEV Prime architecture set to underpin the Corvette EV and all-electric Cadillac sedans, and Cadillac has also unveiled the new Opulent Velocity hypercar concept, however, the Opulent Velocity is more of a design study than a preview of an upcoming production model. Which raises the question – will GM launch a BEV Prime-based Cadillac super car to rival this new Acura performance EV?
