For the upcoming model year, the 2025 Chevy Suburban will feature a mid-cycle refresh that will bring about updates to the exterior styling, interior appointments, and powertrain lineup. Speaking of which, the 2025 Suburban will introduce revised engine availability on several of the SUV’s trim levels.
For starters, here’s a brief summary of the 2025 Suburban’s engine choices. Powerplant options include the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, and the new-for-2025 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine, rated at 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque.
Looking over the table below, we can see that the 5.3L L84 is equipped as standard fare on every trim level except the range-topping High Country, which features the 6.2L L87 instead. The latter is also offered as an option on RST, Z71, and Premier trim levels. Interestingly, the 6.2L L87 is now a standalone option on the RST and Z71 instead of being included and only available with option packages on the 2024 Suburban. However, option packages are still required beforehand on the 2025 Suburban, except on the Premier.
Engine | RPO Code | LS | LT | RST | Z71 | Premier | High Country |

5.3L V8 | L84 | S | S | S | S | S | - |

- Requires Technology and Entertainment Package (PDG) along with either Max Trailering Package (NHT) and Enhanced Trailer View (ZM1) or Sun and Tow Package (PCU)
- Requires 4WD when Sun and Tow Package (PCU), High Country Deluxe (PDM) or Technology and Entertainment Package (PDG) are ordered
The turbodiesel offering was previously a standalone option, but now requires choosing at least one package beforehand. The 3.0L LZ0 is available on all trim levels except the entry-level LS. As GM Authority has been closely following, the refreshed 2025 Suburban Z71 will finally receive the turbodiesel Duramax engine option, as the off-road-focused variant could previously be equipped with a gasoline powerplant only.
It’s worth noting that the 3.0L LZ0 won’t be available until later in the 2025 model year, and that the Suburban doesn’t offer an RST Performance Edition (RPO code PDK) that’s found on the Chevy Tahoe.
As background, here’s an overview of the engine availabilities for the 2024 Suburban:
Engine | RPO Code | LS | LT | RST | Z71 | Premier | High Country |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
5.3L V8 | L84 | S | S | S | S | S | - |
6.2L V8 | L87 | - | - | A1 | A2 | A | S |
Turbodiesel 3.0L I6 | LM2 | - | A | A | - | A | A |
- Included and only available with Sport Performance Package (WBL)
- Included and only available with Off-Road Performance Package (RGN)
As a reminder, the revised 2025 Chevy Suburban will continue to ride on the GM T1 platform. Meanwhile, production is currently scheduled to get underway in October 2024 at the GM Arlington plant in Texas.

Same problem on your 2024 chart here as your Tahoe chart. The LM2 is available on LS for 2024 model year, yet you’ve got it listed as not available. Shows in the GM online ordering guide and in the build and price for 2024.
I wish they would bring back the HD Suburban.
Ah yes, AKA the Mormon Cadillac.
Heavy duty everything, four-wheel drive, big block engine, 40 gallon gas tank.
They don’t make them like that anymore.
The government gets that option actually
Big mistake of GM to no longer offer Super Cruise with the Duramax engine – Not sure the reasoning but very disappointing! Looks like the wife is keeping her Tahoe!
Gm keeps the nickel and dime going. Market shares keep going down.
Please compare the hood height (difference?) between the Tahoe/Suburban and the Silverado 1/2 ton trucks. After 7, I’m hesitant to buy new due to the hood being so much higher than my ’08. Also, an article said the load height was lower now due to the rear suspension change. True? Difference?
The SUVs have a bit more of a hood slope, but the overall height to the top of the front from the ground is definitely taller than your 2008. The 15-20s were higher than those even, but the truck size on those was similar to 2008. The new ones are definitely bigger trucks.
Why… Why in the world would they require a sunroof and bucket seats with the Duramax? That’s the sort of stupid requirements that I hate. Let me get the engine I want with the seats I want and the roof I want.
Glad I got the 23.
If the new oe still have the DOD system cont me out. I will buy the new Navigator. No more replacement motors with GM . I’m done
DFM sticks around as the engines have not changed. 2025 is all cosmetics really. You could always get the 3.0 Duramax. No DFM and gets 25-30mpg.
