When the weather is right, there’s nothing quite like a convertible. The rushing wind, the warm sun, and all the other sensations possible when you take the roof off of a car make driving a joyous occasion. Of course, not everyone can enjoy the perks of convertible ownership – unless, that is, they happen to own a body saw. Now, we’re checking out what happens when one intrepid Buick LeSabre owner decides to make their drop-top dreams a reality with a little DIY.
Found on Facebook Marketplace, this 1998 Buick LeSabre is a bit rough around the edges, but it still fulfills the role of an open-air convertible. As some readers may already be aware, Buick ended production of the LeSabre convertible in the ’70s, which makes this 1998 LeSabre a home-brew special.
“Decent shape overall, top was cut pretty nicely with a body saw and rubber trim molding on all cut edges,” the listing states.
While we see quite a few dings and scratches, as well as several prominent dents and a good amount of rust, we would agree that this thing definitely should be a ton of fun to ride around in during the summer months. Under the hood, this Buick is powered by the Buick 3800 Series II V6 engine, which (perhaps unsurprisingly) leaks oil.
“Not sure from where, don’t care enough to get under it,” the lister states. “Has been leaking the same amount since I’ve had it, two to three years. Other than that, has a good running 3800, with no known mechanical issues.”
The A/C is also non-functional, although the listing does state that the compressor engages. The heater works, and the listing states that the car is often driven “well into October / November.”
Other details include a car cover and supports that apparently keep it dry if it starts to rain, and the sale even includes the original roof for anyone feeling up to welding this thing back into its original shape.
Now, this roofless 1998 Buick LeSabre is listed for $1,000 and is located in Plain City, Ohio.

Early concept car for the Cadillac Sollei…
Probably now has the structural integrity of a cooked noodle!
All unibody convertibles have extra frame stiffeners ! On regular unibody cars the roof is part of the integrity ! Surprised the doors still open and close ! Forbid getting in an accident in this car also !
Notwithstanding the above caveats, the LeSabre “convertible” is rather elegant looking.

M leaking oil mostly comes from the main Engine bearing. It Is not worth pulling the motor to fix it.
In the case of this particular car, no maintenance at all is worth bothering with.
Back in the 50s, the guy who picked up the scrap newspapers from our paper station cut the top off a Nash so he could easily load and unload the scrap paper. At that time, Nash was the only American built car with a unibody structure. Soon, he replaced the doors with 2x4s to keep the car from collapsing.
