When it comes to classic Pontiac models, Firebirds and GTOs often steal the spotlight, but this 1940 Pontiac Special Series 25 Woodie Wagon is very much deserving of some attention as well. Showing off Hercules wood bodywork and a inline-six engine, this antique provides a glimpse into another era of General Motors design. Now, this rare A-body wagon is up for grabs in a new online auction.
Looking over the photos, this classic wagon looks to be in pretty nice shape, especially considering the age. The exterior shows off gray paint alongside rich wood for the side panels and rear, complemented by brown vinyl upholstery inside the cabin. Under the hood, this Pontiac houses the L-head 222.7ci inline-six engine, delivering power through a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission. This setup was factory-rated at 100 horsepower, and the engine is equipped with a Carter carburetor. Despite its age, the wagon appears to be in good working order, with an oil change performed as recently as 2023.
Other notable features of this 1940 Pontiac Special include chrome bumpers, a side-mount spare wheel, and a split tailgate. Inside, the cabin offers three rows of bench seating with front lap belts, a wood-trimmed headliner, and a tan-painted dashboard. There’s also a 100-mph speedometer and additional gauges for monitoring the battery charge, fuel level, oil pressure, and engine temperature.
The wagon rides on body-colored steel wheels with chrome hubcaps and wide-whitewall radial tires, adding to its classic appeal. While the car presents beautifully, there are a few minor imperfections, such as small paint cracks on the right-rear fender and a missing knob for the under-dash heater controller.
Now, this 1940 Pontiac Special Woodie Wagon is offered at auction via Bring A Trailer with a clean Massachusetts title under the owner’s company name. The five-digit odometer shows 91,000 miles, with approximately 500 miles added by the current owner. The vehicle is located in Rhode Island. The auction will end on Monday, August 19th, 2024. As of this writing (8/13/2024), the current highest bid of two placed thus far is set at $10,000.

O.G. Safari Wagon!
Sounds solid and smooth, I love the sound of those old manual transmissions.
I’m a Southern California native but my ENTIRE FAMILY is from Rhode Island, as the article states, so is this Pontiac.
I learned early on in my life that this type of vehicle is called a Beach Wagon. I have a 1956 Providence and vicinity phone book. In the automotive section of the yellow pages, there are several advertisements for auto body repair shops that proclaim “Beach Wagon Specialists”
These cars were a breed all their own. After all, how many times have you had to seal or tighten the joints on your Vista Cruiser?
