Upcoming Chevy Onix Crossover To Expand Brand’s Lineup In Brazil

As the new Chevrolet vehicle resulting from the officially announced investment for the GM Gravataí plant, the upcoming Chevy Onix crossover will expand the brand’s lineup in Brazil.

A Chevy Onix crossover will soon be added to the brand's South American lineup. Shown here is the recent announcement of the upcoming Gravataí plant investment.

The upcoming Chevy Onix crossover is shaping up to be the new vehicle that General Motors will manufacture at the GM Gravataí plant to expand the Chevrolet model lineup in Brazil, entering a segment not yet explored by the brand in the country. Although the automaker has not yet openly confirmed it, the new crossover variant of the Onix is being developed to become the next entry-level utility vehicle in the Brazilian market and will arrive in 2026.

“This new vehicle will be launched in Brazil in 2026 and subsequently exported to the region, with the purpose of expanding the Chevrolet line,” said President of GM South America, Santiago Chamorro. “The choice of Gravataí is strategic because it is a factory prepared for high-volume production and reinforces our commitment to the State of Rio Grande do Sul,” he added.

Joining the hatchback and sedan versions of Chevrolet’s successful Brazilian-created subcompact vehicle, the upcoming Chevy Onix crossover will be a groundbreaking product developed exclusively by GM Brazil’s engineering team to meet growing customer demand for style, fuel efficiency and technology. As such, the new Onix variant will expand the model’s commercial success in the utility category.

In addition, the upcoming Chevy Onix crossover could become the first vehicle with a hybrid propulsion system developed by GM’s Brazilian subsidiary. In this regard, a senior GM South America executive revealed that the next model manufactured at the Gravataí plant will have an all-new, more efficient and innovative powertrain, which could even be exported to other regions outside Latin America.

“The project is advanced. There is already a design very close to completion and we are leading this project globally,” said Vice President of GM South America, Fabio Rua. “Initially the focus is on the domestic market, but we will explore other countries in Latin America and we do not rule out exporting to other regions. It will have an even more efficient and innovative propulsion system,” he finished.
