UAW President Shawn Fain criticized Donald Trump’s United States presidential candidacy last week, and also praised current U.S. President Joe Biden without mentioning his name.
According to a report from Reuters, UAW President Fain ripped into former U.S. President Trump last Friday at the Netroots Nation conference in Baltimore, condemning him by name several times during his 16-minute speech. In the same vein, Fain also commended President Biden without ever using his name or repeating the union’s January endorsement of his re-election.
It’s worth noting that President Biden has struggled to maintain his grip on his presidential candidacy as of late, with several Democrats calling for him to drop his re-election bid.

“It’s clear that Donald Trump in the White House would be a complete disaster for the working class,” Fain remarked in a prepared statement. “We’ve got a president in the White House who wants to stand with the working class and we’ve made incredible gains over the past three-and-a-half years with this president.”
Interestingly, it appears as though the UAW’s backing of Biden has come under fire recently, as reports have emerged that the union’s executive board met last week to discuss concerns regarding Biden’s ability to defeat Trump for re-election. Of course, this is quite the notable development, as Fain and the UAW are important allies in key swing states like Michigan, where the latter is headquartered.
That being said, President Biden recently met with the executive council of the AFL-CIO, the largest federation of U.S. trade unions, in an effort to garner more support. During this event, the AFL-CIO’s executive council unanimously reaffirmed its commitment in supporting Biden for re-election.
“We are standing strong with President Biden and Vice President Harris because they’ve stood strong with us,” AFL-CIO president Liz Shuler noted. “I think UAW members know the difference between these two candidates.”
