The United Auto Workers (UAW) labor union and automotive seating supplier Lear Corp. have reached a tentative agreement, ending a three-day strike that idled production at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri. The agreement was reached late on Wednesday, July 24th, and workers began returning to work on the morning of Thursday, July 25th. The strike had previously idled the GM Wentzville facility as of July 22nd, 2024.
According to a report from Automotive News, the strike involved roughly 500 workers represented by UAW Local 282, and was prompted after negotiations between the UAW and Lear failed to progress. The UAW filed an unfair labor practice complaint against Lear on July 23rd, alleging that the supplier had refused to bargain or was bargaining in bad faith.
Although details of the new tentative agreement were not immediately available, workers were seeking higher wages, improved benefits, and improved working conditions.
During a second-quarter earnings call, Lear CEO Ray Scott said that GM has now resumed regular vehicle production at the Wentzville facility, and that the deal with the UAW will hopefully be ratified soon. Lear lowered its projected full-year adjusted net income to reflect the added costs of the new tentative contract, projecting a range of $630 million to $760 million, down from an initial projection of $730 million to $840 million. Lear is among the world’s biggest automotive suppliers.
In a statement, UAW Region 4 Director Brandon Campbell praised the UAW membership and bargaining team for “Standing Up against the billionaire class and, as Walter Reuther said, forcing this company to say yes when they wanted to say no.”
The GM Wentzville facility produces the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickup trucks, as well as the Chevy Express and GMC Savana full-size vans.
