Toyota Joins Ionna EV Charging Network Joint Venture Alongside GM

Per previous GM Authority coverage, General Motors entered a joint venture with several other major automakers to form Ionna, a new high-powered electric vehicle charging network currently scheduled to launch later this year. With that in mind, rival Toyota has elected to enter the fray and has joined Ionna as an investor and founding partner.

The Japanese-based automaker has joined seven other automakers as an investor in Ionna. As such, this move will allow Toyota and Lexus consumers to access Ionna’s public network of DC fast chargers once it goes online.

“We are delighted to welcome Toyota to our growing Ionna family,” Ionna CEO Seth Cutler noted in a prepared statement. “Their vision for the future of electric mobility in North America aligns perfectly with our mission to push the boundaries for the highest standards of quality, reliability, and customer experience. This partnership marks another significant achievement of many to come in our joint journey to transform EV charging and spearhead the adoption of sustainable transportation in North America.”

It’s worth noting that Ionna currently has plans to install at least 30,000 EV charging ports in North America by 2030. Additionally, these stations will feature both NACS and CCS connectors to support all-electric vehicles.

“We are excited to announce our support of Ionna to deploy DC fast chargers throughout the U.S. and Canada,” Toyota Motor North America President and CEO Ted Ogawa stated. “We believe this will not only promote the adoption of BEVs and increase customer confidence in the technology, but it will provide our Toyota and Lexus customers with access to Ionna’s rapidly growing charging network in North America.”

Notably, Toyota joins BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis as investors in Ionna.
