Take A Detailed Tour Of The Multi-Flex, MultiPro Tailgate: Video

The most standout selling point of GM’s truck lineup, setting its Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, and GMC Hummer EV Pickup lines apart from the competition, is the multi-position tailgate these vehicles are equipped with, developed by The General to add extra utility to some of their most popular models.

In the video we’re sharing, GM Authority Executive Editor Alex Luft provides a rundown of this tailgate’s six functions, which are the same whether the component is branded as Multi-Flex or MultiPro depending on the model. Let’s take a closer look at these functions:

The first feature of the Multi-Flex / MultiPro tailgate to be shown is the cargo stop. With the gate folded down, a section can be raised by pressing a detent and lifting. This provides a stop that helps keep properly secured items from slipping out while extending the bed length by close to 24 inches, as shown in the image below.

The Multi-Flex / MultiPro tailgate in action.

Pressing the top button on the back of the Multi-Flex / MultiPro lets you drop the upper section of the tailgate, providing a workbench at the back of the truck. The main gate’s main portion remains closed, holding in cargo. The work surface can be used for anything from work to cooking or simply as a shelf to place items on for easy access.

With the work surface section lowered and locked in place, a third setup is now on offer in which you can lift the cargo stop. This gives several extra inches of bed space for certain types of cargo while keeping the main portion of the gate in the upright position for better payload retention:

Fourth, the Multi-Flex / MultiPro can be lowered, and the secondary inset work surface dropped using the lower button. This creates a notch in the lowered tailgate so that the user can get closer to the cargo bed for greater convenience without needing to reach:

With the gate in the fourth position, a fifth function can now be accessed by dropping the cargo stop. Now horizontal rather than vertical, the stop functions as a full-width step to climb into and out of the bed. Handles on the sides of the bed give a hand grip for extra leverage in climbing:

Finally, this position exposes two optional 100-watt Kicker speakers operable by Bluetooth, USB, or a 3.5mm aux cable and controlled from the infotainment screen. These speakers provide good sound quality and can be used to involve the truck in various kinds of entertainment:

The Multi-Flex / MultiPro tailgate – which bears the Multi-Flex name on Chevy trucks and MultiPro on GMC – is equipped on the following models from General Motors:

You can see the gate again, with a power lowering function, in our video tour of the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV RST. Crosstown rival Ford recently stepped up its game half a decade after GM introduced its multi-function Multi-Flex / MultiPro with the debut of its Ford Pro Access tailgate. Ram also has its own equivalent.

General Motors, however, remains the automaker that broke new ground by turning the plain pickup tailgate into a flexible, functional part of the truck with many convenient uses.

  1. Didn’t watch the video but I’ll give my 2 cents. I’ve got it on my ultimate, mostly useless features that I’ll never use. Was excited about the extended cargo stop but I quickly discovered at a trip to Home Depot that that unfortunately is about an 1″ short to be useful for securing 4×8 sheets of plywood…. poor engineering. Would have been nice if they would have designed it to slide out and up to be useful for one of the most common sizes of sheet lumber??? Maybe next redesign?

  2. no one happens to mention the overlooked trailer hitch dent in that beautiful tailgate if you happen to leave your hitch installed , now a very common dent.

  3. Maybe don’t leave your tow hitch in. It is illegal in many states/cities and makes fender benders worse for both parties (seriously, you have all that energy on your truck at one specific point. You don’t have zero damage, you now have hidden damage that is frame related, congrats). Plus all the other issues with things like your long truck is now even longer and less likely to fit in a spot, now a place to hit your leg/shin, something that can get rusted and stuck in, etc.

Not a huge fan of this tailgate, same with power tailgates in general. If they made a manual version of this where maybe you pull one handle for the tailgate and another smaller one or some one twice for the inner gate I would consider. But all the stuff I get dumped in my bed would have to just clog the thing up (sand, mulch, dirt, rock, etc). Not to mention the weight of loading things in. I will take the standard manual tailgate with a lock and soft drop feature please, thanks!
