SVG Outruns Field In No. 97 Xfinity NASCAR Chevy At Chicago: Video

Shocking absolutely nobody, V8 Supercars star Shane Van Gisbergen once again proved that he’s right at home behind the wheel of the No. 97 NASCAR Chevy Camaro SS, winning the Xfinity Series race on the Chicago Street Course on July 6th, 2024.

Shane van Gisbergen – who won the inaugural Cup Series race at Chicago last year – was clearly the class of the field, outrunning Ty Gibbs’ No. 19 Toyota TRD Supra and Kyle Larson’s No. 17 Camaro to the checkered flag. Even so, it wasn’t an easy path to victory for van Gisbergen, who faced tough competition from Larson in the opening laps. The two NASCAR Chevy drivers traded the lead back and forth several times as van Gisbergen looked for a way around Larson. He completed the pass and went on to win Stage 1 before falling back after a round of pit stops. Van Gisbergen spent the rest of the race picking off cars one by one as he battled back from outside the top 20.

With six laps left, van Gisbergen was struck by the No. 1 NASCAR Chevy of Sam Mayer, causing the No. 97 Camaro to brush the wall. He lost ground as he gathered his race car back up, letting Gibbs and the No. 2 NASCAR Chevy Camaro of Jesse Love get ahead of him. With just three laps left on the board, van Gisbergen cleanly passed them both to reclaim the lead and didn’t look back.

“It was pretty wild there at the end, but I can’t thank the Kaulig Racing guys enough,” van Gisbergen said after the race. “It was great racing to start with Kyle [Larson]. He was really good on the restarts, and we made our car better with the second set of tires, but whooo, that was fun at the end, passing all those guys. Had some great racing with everyone.”

Larson, meanwhile, said he enjoyed racing Shane van Gisbergen because it was a learning experience for him.

“I was having a blast,” Larson said. “Obviously, I wanted to win today, but I wanted to learn more than anything. I wanted to get to battle with him because he’s just really good at creating shapes and angles and passing. That was an objective of mine, and the first opportunity I got, I wanted to get racing because I just didn’t know if I’d have another opportunity to race with him.”

  1. Why is chevy in nascar? You can’t buy a camaro.
Proof that nascar is an unjustifiable waste of resources. And I like racing.
If it is so important, why kill the automobile you use to represent your brand in the series?

  2. Win on Sunday…have nothing to Sell on Monday that even comes remotely close to resembling what won the day before.
