Ram Files Patent For 3-Row Pickup Truck

GM rival Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has filed a patent application for a set of rear jump seats designed to attach in the back of a truck cabin, signaling potential interest in building a three-row Ram pickup. FCA is owned by Stellantis. The patent application was originally filed on December 14th, 2023, and was published on July 4th, 2024. The application is tagged with patent number US 2024/0217404 A1 and lists several Michigan-based engineers as the inventors.

A patent application that may signal interest in building a three-row Ram pickup truck.

In the patent application, a third-row jump seat configuration is described as attaching and detaching from the rear wall of a passenger cabin. The jump seat configuration includes a detachable frame, a seat back that attaches to the frame, and a seat that pivots while attached to the frame so that it can be configured into a deployable position when needed, or moved parallel to the seat back when it is not.

With pickup trucks increasingly serving dual roles as vehicles for both cargo and passengers, an extra pair of seats in a pinch could prove to be hugely beneficial for some customers.

The three-row pickup truck concept has been in the works for some time now, but has never been put into production. That said, the Ram 1500 Revolution EV concept unveiled in 2023 did include third-row jump seats, as well as a few other interesting features, such as a mid-gate for enhanced utility. Now, it looks as though three-row seating for a pickup truck could be nearing reality as this patent application is considered.

Interestingly, the images used in the patent application resemble the Ram Revolution concept, featuring an extended cab behind the second row, similar to a Ram Mega Cab but with a set of jump seats. Making the seats removable is crucial as it provides extra space in the cabin.

With production of the production Ram 1500 REV ready to kick off in the fourth quarter of the 2024 calendar year, it may be some time before this third-row pickup design hits production, with the earliest iteration likely being a second-gen Ram REV model.

    1. What are they thinking, hey I am guessing it’s a place to store your stuff.
However, after selling vehicles for over 36 years & loads of trucks. I just don’t think that it will have that much demand.
Hey I didn’t think that the Dodge Caravan would sell either, so yes I was wrong!
I am looking forward to see how this truck will be designed, the lay-out & the convenience of getting in and out?

      1. Makes a lot of sense! One thing all trucks lack is interior cargo space with passengers. Basically an SUV with a bed.

  2. Basically it’s a two-row (crew) extended cab. Before it was a single-row extended cab. So an extended crew-cab.
