No. 77 NASCAR Chevy Driver Penalized For Wrecking Ford At Nashville

Carson Hocevar, driver of the No. 77 NASCAR Chevy Camaro SS in the Cup Series, was slammed with heavy fines and a significant point penalty for his actions during the race at Nashville Superspeedway on June 30th, 2024.

According to the latest penalty report on NASCAR.com, Hocevar was fined a whopping $50,000 and stripped of 25 driver points for violating Sections 4.4B: NASCAR Member Code of Conduct Penalty Options and Guidelines in the NASCAR Rule Book. The penalties were assessed because Hocevar intentionally turned the No. 21 Ford Mustang Dark Horse of Harrison Burton under caution, sending the latter into the wall.

Burton’s race car sustained notable damage in the incident, while Hocevar’s NASCAR Chevy race car got away clean. In fact, Hocevar finished 16th, while Burton was relegated to 28th.

The penalty drops Hocevar to 24th in the championship standings, meaning he is unlikely to make the postseasons Playoffs field to compete for the championship.

Additionally, a NASCAR Chevy Truck Series team was penalized after the No. 42 Chevy Silverado RST of Matt Mills was found to have a loose lug after Friday’s event. Crew chief Jon Leonard was fined $2,500 for violating Sections 8.8.10.4a: Tires and Wheels of the NASCAR Rule Book.

Nashville Superspeedway was a mixed bag for the NASCAR Chevy teams. While the No. 19 Silverado of Christian Eckes led flag-to-flag to win on Friday night during the Truck Series race, Sunday’s Cup Series race provided some more interesting results. In fact, two Bow Tie-backed drivers made contact, taking one out of contention for the win when Kyle Larson’s No. 5 Camaro struck the No. 1 Camaro of Ross Chastain. While Larson was able to continue and salvaged a top 10 result, Chastain’s race car was junked, and he was unable to complete the race, finishing 35th.
