The Cup Series made its return to the Indy oval on July 21st, 2024, and Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 5 NASCAR Chevy Camaro ZL1, conquered the historic Brickyard to win. The race was decided in a series of Overtime restarts resulting from late-race crashes, giving Larson the shot he needed to win.
Larson led just eight laps during the 167-lap race, holding off charges from the No. 45 Toyota TRD Camry and the No. 12 Ford Mustang Dark Horse of Ryan Blaney in the closing laps of the race. Blaney led the race to the first Overtime restart alongside Brad Keselowski, driver of the No. 6 Mustang, but Keselowski had to retire to Pit Road as his race car ran its fuel tank dry before taking the green flag. Larson advanced into Keselowski’s position and quickly overtook Blaney.
Larson then had to defend his position through two Overtime restarts. Despite the fact that the No. 41 Mustang of Ryan Preece spun out and became disabled on the penultimate lap, officials elected not to throw a caution, allowing Larson to complete his circuit and win the race.
“This is just such a prestigious place, such hallowed ground,” said Larson. “Pretty neat to get an opportunity to race here on the oval again. What a job by our team. I mean, never gave up at all. And to all the fans, I love it here. I think everything has come full circle with what was meant to be and today was meant to be for us.”
Reddick finished second, while Blaney followed in third place. Christopher Bell’s No. 20 Camry and Bubba Wallace’s No. 23 Camry rounded out the top five, while the next-best result for a NASCAR Chevy went to the driver in eighth place: the No. 99 Camaro of Daniel Suarez. Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 9 Camaro, was the only other Bow Tie team to finish inside the top 10, finishing 10th.
