Nissan Rogue Gets Rock Creek Edition Competing With Chevy Equinox Activ, GMC Terrain AT4

As GM Authority predicted last fall, Nissan has announced the launch of the Rock Creek Edition of the Nissan Rogue crossover, an off-road variant loaded with new technology that will compete against both the 2025 Chevy Equinox Activ and the 2025 GMC Terrain AT4.

The Rock Creek Edition arrives following the mid-cycle refresh introduced with the 2024 Nissan Rogue, which the 2025 Rogue builds on with several significant updates and changes.

Market rivalry between the Nissan Rogue and the Chevy Equinox is assured by the fact that both are introducing their first-ever off-road trim for the 2025 model year. The new 2025 Nissan Rogue Rock Creek borrows the aesthetics and capabilities of the Pathfinder Rock Creek, but offers them to potential buyers in a compact package rather than a mid-size vehicle.

The Rogue Rock Creek is part of an ever-growing trend of more rugged crossovers that emphasize aesthetics over capability. While it does have a few nods to off-pavement mobility, including all-terrain tires, Off-Road View to watch the ground for obstacles and Hill Descent Control, most of its features are aesthetic or related to comfort and luxury. These include heated steering wheel and seats, unique leatherette seat upholstery, available LED cockpit accent lighting, and various “rugged” exterior styling details.

Similarly, the 2025 Chevy Equinox Activ trim level, which is new for the model year, has all-terrain tires on the same 17-inch wheel size as the Nissan Rogue, but has no performance boosts beyond these and its vigorous, outdoorsy styling. The Rogue Rock Creek Edition is equipped with ProPILOT Assist 2.1, a driver assist system offering hands-free driving on mapped highways. Meanwhile, the 2025 Chevy Equinox Activ does not offer the GM Super Cruise driver assist system.

When it comes to motive power, the Nissan Rogue Rock Creek cradles a turbocharged 1.5L inline-three gasoline engine developing 201 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. This somewhat outperforms the Equinox powerplant, the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine developing 175 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque with a FWD drivetrain, or 203 pound-feet of torque in conjunction with optional AWD.

As for the Rock Creek Edition’s other direct General Motors competitor, the 2025 GMC Terrain AT4 trim, GM Authority spy photographers recently caught the vehicle testing without camo. showing it to have a few more functional off-road features than the Rogue or Equinox Activ. These include high-clearance front and rear bumpers and a skid plate, plus all-terrain tires. A sensor is visible for what could be Adaptive Cruise Control or Super Cruise.

Nissan describes the Rogue Rock Creek as being made for “drivers whose lifestyles take them beyond the crowds, with striking design and additional capability for journeys that finish past the end of the pavement.” MSRP has not yet been revealed, but is expected to be in the upper $40,000 range, while pricing for the 2025 Equinox Activ trim starts at $34,395 for FWD vehicles and $36,395 for AWD units.

The Nissan Rogue Rock Creek is expected to launch “later” in summer 2024.

  1. Man is that a confusing looking vehicle.
There’s enough styling on it for three cars….

  3. Why would it be priced in the “high $40,000” range when its competitors start at way less? I cannot believe Nissan would do that.

It is a nice looking package. The Rogue is a nice looking CUV, it deserves a conventional automatic, as the CVT continues to be a stumbling block.

The Nissan turbo triple outpowers gm’s turbo 4 of the same displacement, plus it gets better fuel mileage ratings, by a lot. What’s not to like?

The Rock Creek Rogue might be worth a look. I mean, the truly useful roof rack alone might be enough to sway some wknd warriors away from gm’s entries.

If the Bronco Sport Badlands, Compass Trailhawk, Equinox Activ, RAV4 TRD Off-Road, Terrain AT4, Rogue Rock Creek and Forester Wilderness were tested side-by-side off road, which one would be the most capable? There are different levels of seriousness in these compact CUV off-road packages. For all-out off-road performance, I would choose Ford or Subaru, but for the casual user, the others seem fine.

  4. Nissan is a total mess when it comes to the Rogue. This thing appears WAY overpriced and it makes the refreshed front end look even worse.
Nissan keeps overbuilding Rogues, clogging dealer lots, then offers too-small incentives and runs childish ads for them on TV. “I couldn’t afford it, but I just had to have that Rogue”, said by a 20-something moron.

    1. $28K to $40K isn’t that bad, and is actually industry average. They sell like crazy so no need to incentivize them. I’m an actual grandparent and I don’t sound a “get off my lawn” as that post.

    2. Why would you care if a “20-something” bought a car they couldn’t afford? You don’t have to make the payments, not gonna hurt your credit., let it be a life lesson.

  8. What are you smoking? High $40’s for this trim? The Platinum trim is $40k, and Rock Creek slots below that, so that’s obviously not true. Look at the Pathfinder where the Rock Creek is priced $5k below platinum.
