New Tesla Model 3 Long Range RWD Model Challenges Chevy Equinox EV’s Range-Per-Dollar

When it comes to the all-electric vehicle segment, range-per-dollar matters. While not every EV owner will max out their vehicle’s battery on a consistent basis, it’s still a pretty important factor to consider for customers, especially in light of the plummeting EV prices and the need among consumers to make every dollar count. With that in mind, the Chevy Equinox EV just got a new rival from Tesla with regard to affordable long-range all-electric propulsion.

As it turns out, a new Tesla Model 3 sedan variant just popped up on Tesla’s website, specifically a Long Range RWD model that slots in between the base-level RWD model and the Long Range AWD model. The new Long Range RWD Tesla Model 3 boasts an EPA-estimated driving range of 363 miles, making it the second-longest-range model to wear a Tesla badge next to the Model S AWD. The new Model 3 will also run from 0-to-60 mph in a claimed 4.9 seconds.

The EPA range estimate is what matters though, as although the Chevy Equinox EV still holds the title of America’s most affordable EV with more than 315 miles of range, it does so only just. More specifically, the Chevy Equinox EV 2LT offers a 319-mile range for $43,295, while the new Model 3 Long Range RWD offers a 363-mile range for $43,880. Note that both prices include a destination freight charge. So while the Equinox EV is a bit less expensive, if you calculate the range-per-dollar for each model, you’ll find that the Equinox EV costs $135.72 per mile of range. Meanwhile, the new Tesla Model 3 is offered at $120.88 per mile.

Granted, these cars are in different segments and aren’t considered direct rivals, but nevertheless, Chevy frequently touts the Equinox EV as the most affordable EV with more than 315 miles of range. Unfortunately for GM, this new Model 3 makes that title a little less meaningful. That said, when the Equinox EV 1LT is finally released for the 2025 model year with an even lower price tag, the price advantage over the Tesla will increase. To note, the Equinox EV 1LT will start at just under $35,000.

    2. Well as a Cadillac owner I can tell you their customer service has been phenomenal. No complaints, the dealer is super accommodating even when they needed to put in the heated seats chip and they actually treated me like they took my concerns into consideration answering all my questions and without hesitation gave me a loaner when I had to address the sunroof weather stripping. My Toyota on the other hand, the dealer I visited to address a recall came up to me and said “Have you purchased the vehicle from us?” Not a “good morning,” not a “sorry for the inconvenience of the recall”, not a “thank you for stopping by.” Just a “Have you purchased the vehicle from us?” as if they are doing me a favor to which I responded “If I say no will you treat me differently?”

  2. Although I agree totally with kei and mkAtx above, I’d still take the Model 3 over the Equinox just because it’s not an SUV. Well that and the fact that Tesla has by far the best charging experiences. I do love my Bolt EV (not the EUV), but it’s still not nearly as nice looking as the Model 3.

  5. One is a low to ground sedan and the other is a CUV with cargo space. Kind of an apples and oranges comparison. The only things similar are price and the fact they’re EVs.

  7. I get the feeling Tesla owners are the same low social life guys who rush out to buy the next high dollar iPhone.
    Tech isn’t the High point of their lives … it’s the ONLY point . Sad.
